Show BYRNES TELLS TH STORY CIRCUMSTANCES LEADIXG UP TO A MURDERERS ARREST Strangles His Mistress Chops Her Body With a Cleaver and Attempts At-tempts to Dispose of I But Fails Xew York April William Caesar colored was arrested here tonight charged with murder Superintendent Byrnes tonight told the story of the circumstances which led up to the crime and the work attending the arrest of the supposed murderer the negro ne-gro William Ceasar The story of the crime is most remarkable Ynun day afternoon aft-ernoon detectives found a woman who positively identified the dead woman as Mary Martin the mistress of William Caesar I was ascertained that on Friday Fri-day night the couple had a violent quarrel quar-rel and that the woman threw a glass at the man hitting him on the head Ho then threw her down on the lloor after having grasped her by the tbroat with I both hands There lying on the floor it is said he held her throat in such a grasp that he thought he had killed her but when he released his hold he discovered that she was still breathing Then according ac-cording to the police he secured a piece of cheesecloth which was found tied around her throat and twisted it and then tied i into a double knot and strangled her The next morning he went to work as usual locking the door behind him On Saturday evening Caesar prepared to dispose of the body He borrowed a butchers cleaver and first attempted to cut the legs off at the hips but failing cut them off above the knees He then took a piece of an old rug rolled the body up in i after having tied the ends firmly Taking the bundle in his arms he left the house and at Sixth avenue boarded e a horsecar bound downtown The people peo-ple In the car did not pay any special attention at-tention to the negro At Waverly Place Caesar got off neg walked over to the west side cf the street in front of the building of the New York Bank Note company He leaned against the front of the building to rest and put the bundle on top of the railing The bundle slipped and fell over the railing upon the ground on the other side To attempt to put it together again he saw would be useless s he walked quietly away There it lay undiscovered until 6 oclock Sunday morning when young Phillips found i as he was on his way to mass In a neighboring neighbor-ing church Sunday evening Caesarwent to his rooms and burned up the effects of the woman Caesar is 2S years of age and was born in the West Indies |
