Show TIm DEMOCRATID ATTITUDE If anything more were needed to emphasize rthe divorcement of the real Democratic party from that element which manipulated the financial question ques-tion at the last national convention the free silver resolutions being circulated circu-lated by Congressman Bryan and numerously nu-merously signed by the Democrat members of the House would ba amply sufficient Hitherto the silver Democrats Demo-crats held back by traditions which little favor party dlssention iiavs been 10th to make an open declaration of their intention not to permit the next nomination to go to a gold man J t p > without at least a struggle During 5t this session however they have been openly threatened with a contest con-test for the nominating convention and these resolutions are in answer to a well defined desire that there shall be something around which the silver Democrats can rally in their coming fight S That this defines the real attitude of the party there can be no doubt The presiuent while traditionally the head of his party is no greater than he source from which he springs Should he disregard for one moment the vital principles of his party he does not bind it When there comes a disagreement disagree-ment his authority In the name of the party Is not paramount and the right to speak devolves upon those who are more familiar with the attitude of the I Democratic masses But the resolutions are significant inI I another sense than their declaration of Independence to the gold men There is In them a declaration that the I silver issue is the issue of 1396 The people of the west have become used to the idea that the silver cause will tf force itself to the front In that they underestimate the power and designs of their opponents The silver question is not to be brought to the front if by any efforts of the gold men the tariff can still be used to distract the attention atten-tion of the American people Already it Is generally admitted that the He publican programme Is to make higher pd duties a prominent Question The Democratic gold men are not less zealous zeal-ous than the Republicans and may take up the old tariff dispute to evade the financial issue With another respite of four yeArs they hope to rivet the gold chains fast upon the people of the country At least they can contract the currency lt to some extent in that time and gain I during the period they are unrestrained unre-strained They will make every endeavor en-deavor to have some other monetary scheme adopted in which more paper moneywould be issued on the basis of gold as a money of ultimate redemption redemp-tion With this scheme well to the fore the announced determination of the Democratic silver men not only to nominate a free silver man for the presidency but to force the Issue is very important It gives one more evidence evi-dence that Democracy is the true friend of silver |
