Show LIGHT OX TJ1K TIMES ATTACKS Information received from New York direct confirms the views of The Her aid in reference to the animus behInd the attacks on prominent Utah gentlemen gentle-men which have appeared in tIle columns of the New York Times We learn from an authentic source j that the purpose in view is to head off the movement for railroad from this I city to the Pacific coast That road is not likely to be built unless the negotiations which have been in progress pro-gress for eastern capital can be consummated con-summated The Utah Company has bee expecting to secure that capital on the securities which itjis able to offer inthe valuable properties it con d troTs To prevent this great business transaction and so paralyze the company com-pany in its operations we are told the Times articles were published The object is to weaken the financial standIng of the gentlemen who are at the head of the Utah Company They are prominent Mormon Church leaders lead-ers It is now evident by the latest article in the Times as reported In the Tribune Washington special that the credit of the Church Itself Is to be attacked at-tacked for that institution Is declared to be heavily involved financially instead stead of being backed by vast wealth as popularly supposed Thus both the Individuals and the church Which they represent are put in a bad financial light so that capital may be excited to its proverbial timidity and the funds expected to lush the works intended by the Utah Company may fail to be obtained Politics we are assured were Introduced traduced In these attacks to divert attention tentIon from the real influence at Work which is in the Interest of the Southern Pacific railway The political politi-cal references in them were intended to work with the financial parts in the direction here Indicated This intelli gence does not come from a Demo cratic source Indeed the intent has been to make it appear1 that the asSaults aults came from disguntled Demo rats so as to mislead searchers after the author of the communications in the Times It will be remembered that The Herald gave its opinion very much to this effect when the subject was first agitated Commenting upon he authorship of the letter we said UIn seeking for the animus behind such a publication we confess we cannot can-not discover anything but a financial motive In our opinion its publication was procured for the purpose of preventing pre-venting if possible the consummation of the money transaction in which its it-s well known Mr Cannon was and Is interested on behalf of the Utah company com-pany The projects of that organization for the benefit of Utah include the ex tension of the Salt Lake Los Angeles An-geles railway to the Pacific coast AnythIng that would tend to prevent the acquirement of the funds necessary to that enterprise would work in the Interest of people opposed to it In that direction then we would look for the inspiring cause The political allusions In it we regard re-gard as a blind to the essential animus of the article It could do the Democratic Demo-cratic cause no good in Utah to make it appear that all the First Presidency of the Mormon church are engaged inactive in-active support of the Republican party That ought to be perceived at a glance It there is any political motive behind be-hind the attack on Mr Cannon we cannot perceive wherein it would be beneficial to tho Democratic party We can say most positively that the I Democratic party had no hand and no purpose in view in the publication or preparation of those Times communications communi-cations If any Democrat or Democrats Demo-crats were concerned in them it was individual and not party work But even otf that there is no proof There is reason for suspecting an effort from the quarter indicated by our New York Information and if the Utah company shall fall of the funds which it needs to embark in the great enterprises en-terprises projected it may look for the cause not in political circles but in the direction of corporate power interested in-terested in maintaining a gigantic railway rail-way monopoly |
