set and maintained main-tained during 1894 the appropriation of 0000 made by the legislature for the payment of jurors witnesses and phonographic reporters during the I years 1SS435 will show a deficiency of over 530000 at the end of the latter year I This was the showing made by Territorial Ter-ritorial Auditor Caine in a special re port made yesterday to United States District Attorney Judd at the latters request The report will form the basis of statistics being prepared by the judge and is as follows DlHSrlft Court Expenses Expenses or the district courts of the territory of Utah phonographic reporters re-porters in territorial criminal danes for the years 1894 and 1895 and for services ser-vices of jurors in territorial civil and criminal cases See laws of 1894 chapter half the ap ropriation for the years 189i and 1895 1522373 Judges of District COurts There was appropriated by the legls ntive assembly to each of the Judges of the district courts of the territory as a salary for 1894 and 1895 the sum of 15003000 one half of which was paid during the year 1894 Clerics of Sanreme and District Court There was appropriated by the leg siative assembly of 1894 as salaries to the clerks of the supreme and district courts for the years 1894 and 1895 in lieu of all fees the following sums Clerk of supreme court 500 half of Which was drawn in 1894 250 Clerks of district courts 2050 hal of which was drawn in 1894 1325 Territorial Reform School There was appropriated by the leg slatlve assembly of 1S94 for the main tenance of the territorial reform school for the years 1894 and 1895 1504492 of which amount 57500 and an unexpended unex-pended balance of 5000 of the appropriation priation of 18921893 was drawn during the year making the expenditure for J894 12600 Fugutives From Justice Amount expended fop the capture and return of escaped convicts and other fugitives from just G during the year 1894 2103 Gratuities to Discharged Convicts Amount paid to 72135 68 Unless there Is a reduction in the number of witnesses subpoenaed before grand juries and before the courts in criminal cases there can be no great reduction in court expenses for the year 1895 I therefore estimate the expenditures to be about the same as for 1894 making a deficiency over and above appropriations for jurors and witnesses etc at the close of 1S95 of not less than 30000
