| Show PROBABLY HIS LAST LETTER FUOM THE LATE FRED DOUGLASS I Was Written But Two Days Prior to the Death of the Great iVogro Loader at Anncotn I I ISpecial to The Herald I Butte Mont Feb 22Ellis P Pass I more of this city today received a letter I written by Frederick Douglass two days before the latters death at Anacosta The letter Is as follows Cedar Hill Anacosta D C Feb 17 lS5 E P Passmore My Dear SirI cannot say I am much elated by the victory by the Republican I that the Demo party though am glad Dpmo cratic party has met with defeat I have my fears that the victory of the Republicans cans may make them even a little more indifferent about protecting human rights under the constitution than they were when they were in power before It is to the shame of the Republican party that it could protect the rights of American citizens everywhere but at home I made jio earnest effort to see that the constitutionwa5obeyed in the southern states and tho Ballot box protected The ourteenth amendment declares that when any state shall deprive any of its citizens of the elective franchise representation repre-sentation shall be reduced etc No attempt tempt has been made to enforce this provision pro-vision by the Republican party or by any other yet all swore to support the constitution con-stitution I have not declared for any particular candidate for the Republican nomination in 1896 nor do I see any need of such declaration at this distance of time The man likely to get it will be from a state which the Republicans may think it difficult but important 40 carry Old Mr Availability will as usual decide the question as to who the man shall be still we have a chance of getting a better bet-ter man from the Republicans than from the Democrats or the Populists I Very truly yours FREDERICK DOUGLASS Mr Passmore las been a personal and intimate friend of Douglass since the early days of the antislavery movement and was closely associated with GarrIson GarrI-son Phillips William Wells Brown Douglass Ivucretla Mott Abby Kelly and others in the antebellum days I |
