Show N E CONVENTION A Sal Lakes Chances For Securing I Next Year REPRESENTATIVES HERE JMS OF TEE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE INVESTIGATE Deeply Impressed With the Advantages Advan-tages Offered By This CityMet By Railway Officials and Local EductrTo Superintendents Give Their Views a to This Cts Melt Salt Lake City stands a very good chance of securing the convention Of the NatIonal Educational association next year despite the acton of the board of director In voting the gathering gather-Ing to Los Angeles Four of the six members who constitute con-stitute the executive committee were in the cIty yesterday and after investigating Inves-tigating every condition went aY convinced of several facts First That the tabernacle Is the bet assembly hal In the United States for such a purpose second that the churches and other assembly halls are amply sufficient for oil department meetng of the association and fin ally that the city and its hotel accommodations ac-commodations are able to take car of a cwd of 1000 people THE COMMITTEEMEN PRESENT The gentlemen who arrIved at this cnclusion were President E O Lrte of the state normal school located at Minersville Pa Assistant Superintendent Superin-tendent Albert G Lane of Chicago President Irwin Shepard of the state normal school located at WInona Inn and who Is also secretary of the national association and J M Greenwood Green-wood superintendent of schools at wo suprntendent Kansas City Al these gentlemen are members of the executive committee and their mIssion in the west Is for the specIal purpose of investigating the conditions In connection with the next national convention cnventon PLEASANTLY ENTERTAINED The distinguished party arrIved at 9 oclok esteFday morning and were met at the stton by SuperIntendent ispaugh PresIdent J M Tanner of the state agrIcultural college F A Wadleigh of the Rio Grande Western and D E Burley of the Oregon Short Line They were at once escorted to carriages which stood in waiting and agi f Ian I were driven around the city 1 At noon an organ recital by Prof Daynes at the tabernacle was one of the features of the day greatly enjoyed the visitors vIsit-ors declaring the great audItorIum the most Ideal convention hal In the country mos cnventon try After luncheon at the AIa club a special train took the party out to Saiair In the afternoon returning about 430 when some of the school buildings and other place of interest were visited I was after the partys return to the Knutsford for dinner that Dr Mihispaugh introduced the newspapermen Mispaugh Introuce newspapr men and SuperIntendent Greenwood was not reluctant In talking SUPT GREENWOODS VIEWS As members of the executive committee com-mittee we were sent west to look over the field as It Is not entirely certain that Los Angeles will get the convention conven-tion I should perhaps modify this by sayIng that Los Angeles has been selected se-lected but circumstances might arise that would make i impracticable as a cpnventon city We went to Los Angles An-gles frt then to Portland which was third In choIce and Tacoma occupyIng i fourth place and finally are now in Salt Lake which was a very close second sec-ond to Los Angeles There are sever matters to betaken be-taken into consideration here will probably be something like eight or ten thousand people In attendance upon such a convention and we find that your hotel accommodations are suf cent for 300 Then assuming the balance bal-ance will be taen care of by boarding rooming houses and private homes that obstacle Is overcome Of course there Is no question about the assembly hal The tabernacle Is without doubt th best place r the United States of ts a convention so that mater Is settled Then there are about 15 departments which must be taken care of About three of these require a hal sufficient to hold from 800 to 100 whIle the other oth-er need only accommodate upwards of 300 Lat but not least however Is the question of railroad rates A great many of our teachers in the est are olo averse to spending so much mdney as even one fare for the round trIp I avery a-very low rate could be secured the matter mat-ter would be settledSalt Lake would get the convention SUPERINTENDENT LANE Superintendent Lane eipressed himself him-self a satisfied with the conditions In Sal Lake and added Ve found them just a your superIntendent had repr sented to us The Importance thIs remark carried with It was not trilling I Is now gen emIly known that the only reason why Los Angeles was selected as the meeting meet-Ing place wa because of a promise by the railroads that a 50 rte for the round trip from Chicago would be made Now i seems very Improbable that the Southern pacif wl be able to make its promIse good and hence the I directors who voted for Los Angeles on the assumption that such extraordinary low rte would be made while In reality ity favoring Salt Lake are advocating theIr original choice When the feasibility of holdIng the convention in the southern California metropolis began to be questioned the dIrector turned the matter over to the executive committee The very pre ence of that body In the west isan In dlcation that Los Angeles Is not absolutely abso-lutely sure of its prize BUT TWO CITIES SN IT As far a Portland and Tacoma are concerne they can hardly be considered con-sIdered In the race at nil Portland has not any convention hail suitable and while Tacoma has a exposition building build-Ing whIch mIght b pressed Into service serv-ice its hotel accommodations are inadequate In-adequate The matter then lies between be-tween Los Angeles and Salt Lake If the former cannot offer a 50 rate ci promised It Is quite likely Sal Lae will be chosen and halt rates plus 2 which latter amount goes to the association sociaton will then be operative The final decIsion In the matter will not b announce until about Dec 1 The member of the committee her yesterday could not say whether the fna vote would be by mal or a meeting meet-Ing of the committee called I Is quite likely the later course will b followed fol-lowed That however Is a matter we will determine on our homeward journey fOld Dr SheDard The party left for the eat last evening even-ing over the Rio Grande Western at 740 Before departing they expressed themselves In terms of ters highest praise I In connection with the treatment re celyed In the city during their brief stay They marveled at the magnificence magni-ficence of the Satair magl pronounced the Webster an Ideal school building GROWTH OF OUR SCHOOLS I Is simply marvelous said Dr Shepard when you come to consider the school system here of only a few year ago and then view I tOday I consider your city one of the most progressive In the educational lne of any place in the country and no doubt superintendent much of it Is due to your very ale suprintendent O A r i |
