Show I A i MANY SHTLfRS HAVEPERISHED Victims of the Wisconsin Forest Fires OVER ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE ARE lUISSING Many Dead Bodies Found Burned Beyond Recognition Fires Are Still Raging and Terrible Scenes Are WitnessedHundreds of People Are Homeless and the Property Loss Is EnormousFor est Fires Still Sweeping Over Col oradoThousands of Acres of Forests Are Ablaze Milwaukee Wis Oct IA specIal to the Journal from Rice Lake says Relief Re-lief parties are now out through the burned districts south and west of this city The loss of life from the disastrous disas-trous forest fires cannot now be estimated esti-mated but it will be great The work of getting to the burned districts is slow as all the bridges are down Over 100 people are missing Many dead bodies have been found and they are burned beyond recognition recogni-tion The remains of one man by the name of Nelson were found this morning at the bottom of a well where he had gone to escape the fire At another place a woman and two children were found in a well The woman was so badly burned burn-ed that she will die At another place where a man had been plowing in a field his charred remains and the carcasses car-casses of his horses were found today to-day All the cattle horses and other stock in a large district have been burned to death Even the wild animals could not escape es-cape the flames The wind this morning is southeast and blowing at a rate of about 40 miles an hour Fires are now raging in the hardwood timber lands between thIs city and Cumberland but fortunately the district I dis-trict is lightly populated The mills in this city have been shutdown shut-down and another reserve fire department depart-ment has been ordered out FOUR LOGGERS LOST Chippewa Falls Wis Oct IAugust Mason of this city one of the most extensive ex-tensive loggers in Wisconsin returned today from a trip to his camps at Cedar Lake Barron county He had an ecit ing time and reported the loss of all his camps and outfits at Cedar Lake He also believes that four of his men have lost their lives in the flames Mr Mason Ma-son left the camps with his crew on rhursday morning and they narrowly escaped with their lives When they started the fire was eight miles away but the wind was blowing a gale and the flames were rapidly Lining on them All rushed for a lake a mile away and when the edge of the water was reached the fire was upon them Men and horses plunged into the lalte and remained there until the flames had passed over them The heat and smoke was almost unbaraDle lfOlr men of the crew who were in the rear I of the larger party are missing and Mr Mason says there is no hope that I hey are safe The scene Mr Mason says was terrible ter-rible On every side there was a sea of fire rapidly growing and destroying everythIng Camps and outfits In that locality are all burned also over 500 oxen The moans of the animals could be heart in all directions Dozens of farm houses that Mr Mason passed in the morning were in ashes in the afternoon after-noon Many buildings that were at least a quarter of a mile from the woods were destroyed the flames running run-ning along the meadows and fences Hundreds are homeless many even losing all their household goods Frederick Fred-erick weyhauser has just returned from a trip through the fire regions He can Jive no estimate of the amount of his pine losses The following estimates of losses were made by a prominent lumberman here Northewestern Lunmber com J paIn 22000 August Mason 3000 Mississippi River Lumber company 80 000 Chippewa Logging company 50 000 Knapp Stout Co 225000 The losses include standing timber The loss logs camps and camp outfits of farm property in Clark Barron and Chippewa counties is estimated at 300 j 000 Latest reports say that all hopes of r checking the flames have been abandoned aban-doned Nothingbut rein will save the i enormous amount of property that is 1 burning and threatened MILLIONS LOST 4 Milwaukee Wis Oct IThe pecuniary pe-cuniary damage wrought by the forest J fires in the northwestern part of the state cannot be estimated at present It may amount to anywhere between fi 1 1000000 and5000000 Many days will elapse before the extent of the ruin of fi the fiery element HI be known A general rain is falling throughout the state tonight This will undoubtedly put an end to the devastation 1 J |
