Show THE CITY COUNCIL LECTURED At Tuesday night session of the city council a notorious agitator appeared ap-peared before that body and gave it a lecture that was In reality an insult to It Several members of the council objected to the tone and substance of the talk but their objections proved futile while one member had the boldness bold-ness to call It by no harsher and juster name to champion this agitators right to address the council in the manner he did He should not have been allowed to proceed for a single moment after he uttered his first sentence sen-tence which told as plainly as his whole speech afterwards did that he Intended to be not frank but impudent impu-dent And the promise of his first sentence sen-tence was fulfilled to the very letter The cause in which this agitator came was that of the unemployed of the city Those who chose him to present their cause to the council acted unwisely In choosing him the council acted supinely in listening to his harangue ha-rangue A proper presentation of any case which always Includes respect for those to whom it is presented will always command a respectful hearing and generally bring relief where It Is possible to grant relief But no such presentation of any cause In the manner man-ner this one was presented to the city council bv the agitator will ever receive re-ceive the consideration it should The council should not have listened to him when it became evident what kind of a talk he was going to make It should maintain a semblance of selfrespect at least |
