Show THE TELLER BOOM I I The silver men who bolted the St I Lows convention have made a mistaken I mistake-n placing the naine Senator JI Teller before t the public as a presiden tial candidate the lcry day after they bolted the convention i Ther have not even goneback to their constituencies to ask PProval of their action It probably will be approved but it may not be Bolting a national convention is a very serious matter bolting a na tional convention without Instructions Is a most seriousmatter It is true that Senator Toiler ± has not been nom j nated by any national convention it Is true that those who have presented his name claim no authority or right other than that which belongs to every Ulan to express his personal l conic tJons but Senator Teller has been nominated nom-inated and those who have named him Will work untiringly to have him accepted ac-cepted as the candidate of the parties that are still to hold their national conventions con-ventions Just what these gentlemen mean when they say that the time has come for a return to the simpler and more direct method of naming men for national service than has cb tutned in recent years is hard to understand un-derstand The early method of nom InaJng presidential candidates was the I nrtthod by congressional caucus Evi deafly this Is not the simpler method desired This is a matter of small importance im-portance though What is said of Senator Teller Is all true enough Of course it is possible to name a man as a presidential candidate I can-didate and have him voted for without the formality of a national convention hue it would bea very haphazard experiment ex-periment to attempt to elect presIdential I presIden-tial electors without the formality of i I conventions to name them After ths there must be j organization to carry on campaign work Those who are urging Senator Teller as a presidential candi date wouia seejn to have overlooked all this They hae not Their expectation expec-tation Is that the Democratic national convention will pick him up and make him the candidate of the Democratic party If such is their expectation and that Is the general belief and Representa I tIe Hartmans talk on the matter i makes it almost certain then we think I they are doomed to disappointment j While the Chicago convention will recognize II rec-ognize the financial question as the j I paramount issue and declare for free j sliver it will likewise nominate a Dent j ocrat as its standard bearer Of this j we think there can be no doubt If i the friends of silver who left the St j I Louis convention insist upon running Senator Teller as an Independent silver I candidate they may succeed in defeating defeat-ing the cause of free silver but they will never succeed In electing Mr Teller Tel-ler They would simply be pursuing a I suicidal policy The wise thing for them to do for the advancement advance-ment of the common cause of silver would be for them to accept the Chicago nominee as their candidate candi-date providing of course that he Is a free silver man and of this there is little cr no doubtand work for his election as the standard bearer of the free silver forces If this is not done there may be two silver candidates in the field with the result that both will inevitably be defeated |
