Show HOTEL GOSSIP I The cracker business and the baking of bread Is very good at present said J B Hedyt or St Louis at the Ken on last evening 001 have never seen a better season than the present and I have been In the business nearly forty years Of course the trust started In to seize and corral every Important bakery In the country and did I get possession of a great nofoi many Ia was offered a very good price I for my plant but I had made It grow from It very small concern to Its present dimensions I concluded I could run It without any aid from the trust and I declined de-clined an otters My business Is perfectly satisfactory and I dont belIeve I have lost a dollar by not entering the trust My bakery and factor works night and day and I haVo no trouble In disposing of all the product I can turn out George R Hurlburt oC the Baltimore mine Ouray Colo is at the Ken on He said The smelter strike In Colorado Is by I no means settled It has devolved into a contest of capital verses labor by that I mean f is I whether the agitators from I various points or the actual labor of Colorado I Colo-rado will carry the point There was no difference between the smelter owners and tho employees even after the eight hour law became a fact until the agitators I from the Couer dAlene and othe points came into our state and started the agitation agi-tation Really the smelter men were sat I laded until the difficulty was started by da n ltot min nJe paid agitators or walking delegates as they are termed by some organizations I do not look for an adjustment oC they question In any short time One thing is sure the mine owners are wIth the smelter owners in this matter OUt of the many commercial men that visit Salt Lake one or the most congenial and successful Is George F McArthur who sells nothing but highclass stationery station-ery from Holyoke Mass He is at the Kenyon and wilt be in the city several days Speaking of his trade last evening he said I ftlo JigldbeU stationery that Is writing paper and that only oC the higher grades no envelopes that Is I a distinct branch Our trade Is very large 111 the west and we always bet our share In Salt Lako City and Utah This season we will incrense our trade tully j i W per cent In Utah While trade has been I good ever whele I find no place where It I j appears to be better than In this state I and I am most supremely satisfied with I my annual vIsIt here I Sold more finery here this trip than I I ever did before said I Julius Lyons of I Minneapolis at IIWe nllf yesterday I Ho Is In the millinery line and has a big trade in the Intermountain section My I sales In Utah and Idaho this season are I tully double what they have ever been i I find business conditions unusually good ntidn lr gm it St and while I I am awaiting trade here at the hotel 1 thought I was all through Every mail however brings notice of another I an-other arrival to come and 1 suppose I will have to stay u whIle longer On my year I ly trips west I make Salt Lake my headquarters head-quarters and have my trade visit me here Judging from present indications I will be here on Purple day Mr Lyons Is a very prominent Elk In I Minnesota and during his visit has taken very great Interest In the coming cele bration He Is a particular friend of E E Mulvey Salt Lake lodges exalted ruler A T Wurtz of Pittsburg the representative repre-sentative and electrical expert of the Westinghouse Electric Manufacturing company of Pittsburg is at the Ken on just returned from Provo I went to Provo to inspect the electric light plant there and to specially look after Its protection from electric storms and lightning The Provo plant Is a verb tine one and transmits power to Mercer a distance of thlrt live miles To do so the highest voltage known Is employed and that Is why I came out to investigate The voltage Is 40000 something terrific when It comes to power and heretofore unheard of It is not so great a wonder that thIs terrific electrical power Is trans I I mItted but whether it could be done with safety and reliability was a conundrum However it is In successful operation It i i 1 ffiolg lg has not had a particle of trouble and has experienced no interference from light I nlng nor electrical storms The Westinghouse company has its lightning arresters In service on the sys I tern and 50 far they have proven effect ual The object oC my visit was to thor oughy Inspect the plant as It has put our arresters to the severest test they have over been subjected Thus far I am thoroughly satisfied Toys have progressed with the times said John X Kleff of New York at the Kenyon yesterday ur course we progress I all the time but good times benefit us I I beyond any novel Inventions that may be devised This year my trade Is larger by I Par than It has ever been and when I leave Salt Lake City It will be with the satisfaction that my business here has I been far more than 1 anticIpated Toys this season are more noel and Ingenious than ever before and as a rule art more expensive than they have been In former seasons Some very novel con trIvances have been Invented and I pity the ordinary man If his offspring could come In and select their choice However the sales I have made demonstrate that money is loose Dr W R Kirk a surgeon of the regu lar army Is at the Ken on en route to Manila under orders J Y Prosser a cigar salesman who makes Utah every year Is In town and looking after his trade Judge Jacob Johnson or Spring City Is registered at the Cullen Swen Klelson a well known merchant of Fainiew is at the Cullen
