Show RAGE MEET t IN SIGHT Rich Cash Prizes Hung Up For Wheelmen t f D QRATION DAY PROJECT 4 SALT LAKE AMATEURS WILL BECOMPitOFSSIONALS I 4 J P Gunn the Old Salt Lake Professional Pro-fessional Is at the Head of the Itace Idovement California League Will Probably Control Tttck at Salt Palace c t > Salt Lake City 2Ow has a race mfet n sight at Iact and J P Gunn the old Salt Lake professional Is the prime moverin the affair He is making ac thcpreparatjons for a niet to be held at Calders park about May 30 and proposes jf possible to make it one of the good old kind that were so attractive attract-Ive in 1895 Gunn is a believer in cash prizes and 1Je intends making the prIze list one that will be attractive for the professionals profes-sionals He will have two amateur events on the programme but the Iwin clpa1 contests will be between the cash prize men He claims that no racIng man can afford to spend time and money for tralnll7h and other expenses unless there Is some remuneration In sight and in order to secure a large entry list of competitors some Inducement wIll be offered I J Gunns view is one that is shared by the principal rae meet promoters of the country at the present time and I almost all the successful meets of the I past few rears have been given with cash prizes for contestants There are Very few amateurs In this section who will not be willing to turn professIonal if a good season of cash Prize racing Is offered and the May 10 met wIll undoubtedly be the forerunner forerun-ner of others of the same kind The track at Calderl is badly in need of resurtacing and it is itir GUllns Intention to have it put in shape at once so that the riders may start In traIning for the comIng meet The last turn has been found in past meets to be insufficientl banked and in a measure dangerous for fast work With this defect remedied barring 10 eation is all that could be desired The first race will be a novice race and It is safe to predict that it will be necessary to run this race in several heats Never before in the history or cycle racing in Zion has there been so many untried riders waiting to make their debut There are at least a score of ambitious ones who have never appeared ap-peared in a track contest who will be eligible to this event and the fact that nearly all of these have new 1899 racers indicates their intcntiLl to try their mettle Bald Cooper Taylor and the great Zimmerman all won their first honors in a novice race and it Is not at all Improbable that the coming champion of Utah ma win his fit5t spurs in the novice race on May O I I Since the dlsaffeetlon of L A W I members in Utah and the gradual divorcement i I di-vorcement of western racing interests from L A XV control the question as i to what rules will govern Utah racing has been under discussion The Cali I fornia Associated t Cycling clubs se offlt af ceded from the L A W several years I ago and since that time have pmcti I I el controlled racing in all the Pa cifc coast state Texas Arizona and New Mexico have come into the C A C C control and British Columbia has done likewise Colorado has practically practical-ly ben lost to the L A Y and wi I probably hold all its cents this year under the sancton and rule of the coast league The C A C C has been Petitioned by some of the largest track in the cast to extend its protection and rules to them but it has wisely refused to undertake such a task at the present time That tie principal governing body of cycle racing WEt of the Mississippi Mis-sissippi will be the C A C C the coming com-ing year there is i little doubt and probably prob-ably Utah will fall into lne ll Gunn wllo has been on the coast the past two years favors the rules of this as socaton and if sanctIon can be obtained ob-tained It is altogether probable that the coming Calders park meet will be contested under the rules of the western west-ern Iaton The C A C C favors local option regarding Sunday race meets has adopted a liberal view toward profe sional contests and liberality in other maters that met with the approval t of the western Interests more fully I than do the stringent blue law rules of the eastern L A W II I The L A W is making strenuous ef I I forts to hold the west in line but is apparently meeting with little success I I Jack Sharp has been reappointed handicapper dicapper for this distrIct but he is I himself rather dubious as to the uJt I mate success of the L A W in controlling con-trolling racing affairs in Utah In case the C A C C agrees to father the I Utah racing interests it wi probabl be necessary to appoint a local caring board representative and Sharp has i I been mentioned as a capable official for this place H he could be induced to accept t1th universal the appojntment favor would met C C Smith whom the oldtme raCeme raCe-me < t sDcetatOls will renicinber asP as-P < p Smith the speed i amateur is entered this season In the Caders park grcunds Is a supporter of the Land A ¼ L-and Is endeorilg to induce Gnn to stand by the L A W A canvass of the ractng men shows an aitnost amoit unanimous elng in favor of the Cal 1fvrnl assocaton rules and the out ClIme will be watched with interest The rating men are in a peculiar oiton for If they race under tIle L A W rues they are liable to be barred from C A C C races and a the latter as sodaton is the only one sunuortn Sunday races rielng men do not care to take chances of missing the IIooll purcs which will probably be put up at coming Sunday meet A match race has been arranged between be-tween Harry Halgen and C H Cut tir to be run off early next month Tin dIstance will he fhe miles and I Cutting has allowed Haigren a handp of oneIIUarter mile and thirty yards 01 a quartermie trcI A Side lt waiting the return of Architect I Klettng from the cat Upon his re I trn plans will be drwn for the track and estlmates obtained obtine upon them As scon as the exact cost of the track and enclosure can be ascertained steps will be taken to form a stock company Thb Sal Palace company will be asked to subscribe for all or part of the shock I and as the cycle men clam to be ale to prove tat the track will be a good Paying Investment Cere should belittle I be-little difficulty In raising the necessary amount to construct the track I the Liberty park grounds asked for are allotted al-lotted to the Sat Palace company the I track will be permanently located for a period or ten years and as the cost uf the track will be less than 1750 and the additional cost for maintenance very little the proposition should be vey lte te prplton an attractive one for anyone looking for a good midway investment Several member mem-ber of the Salt Palace committee have Sven their assurance tat the pro po slUon wi rive their support Captain Smith of the Social Wheel club is rather IndIgnant over same uf the reports concernIng his connecton connecton with the Iroquois club I was reported that the Indians at their meetm I last Monday night Sillith I Monda night gave Smit1 one week in which to consider the pr dicn mont in which he had placed himself by accepting the captaincy of the Social Wheel club while president of the iroquois Iro-quois club Smith emphatically denies the truth of this statement lie declares de-clares that the meeting last Monday night was one called to consider th adoption of a constitution and bylaws and the question as to his right t hold offices in both cubs was not broached nt the close of the meeting Just be fore adjourning the meeting dmih ten dered his resignation and a vote was taken on It There was only one ballot in favor of accepting the resIgnation and Smith withdrew his resignation and is now sun president of the 110 club quols and captain of the Social Wheel clubHe He states that the chub interests will not conflict as it is not the purpose of the Iroquois club to make Sunday runs but to confine theIr runs to evenlna I schedules so that his duties as uresi dent of the IroQuois will not Interpre with his Social Wheel club o lgatons The Social Wheel club held a regular business meeting last Wednesday night Two new members wer admitted to membership I was decided to give a chub enter tnment at the club roms May 12 and a limited number of invitations will bt iSbued to outside parties The pro I gramme will be strictly a musical one and refreshments will be served |
