Show REMAINS BROUGHT HOME great sorrow everywhere funeral will ocena next sunday sanday salt lake sept 5 the special funeral car bearing the remains of the late n reached ached this city about yesterday morning at ogden the funeral car was attached to the regular rio eio grande passenger r accompanying the remains were mrs woodruff president and mrs george Q cannon bishop and mrs clawson and colonel isaac trumbo who came through from san francisco andar daynes who met the party at and asabel it woodford of Z C M I 1 who joined them at battle mountain A special train went up over the rio hio here at berday morning and bearing of 0 church dignitaries and members of the family of the deceased besides a few who were invited to accompany them when the funeral car reached ogden there was a great throng of mourning people and during the stop there the car was thrown open and all who desired to do so were permitted to pass through and view the casket during this time there were many evidences of sorrow and touching little incidents all showing the strong hold bold president woodruff had bad upon the hearts of his bis people I 1 many evidences of g grief rief were manifest at ogden and at every station along the way to this city where large crowds were reverently gathered there wasa large crowd at the depot in this city when the train arrived all heads bends were uncovered and a silent tribute paid to the deceased whom all felt had been such a potent factor in the building up in of the church and the country the casket was gently carried from the train to the bear hearse seby by two hons bons and our grandsons F af f the late president the remains weirs then taken to woodruff villa where they were viewed by close friends and relations no arrangements range ments have been made for the funeral other than that it will probably occur next sunday september 11 wilford woodruff was a man 0 of f sterling character simple in tastes tensions yet of great force of character lie ile cured cared little for the homage due his exalted but was proud of the companionship of his hia close friends his home borne life was it a happy one where lie he basked in the smiles of his younger children and took a great interest in their childish play ills his greatest desire was to perform bis duty to his people which he did without display or ostentation no man was ever more loved by his people and there will be horrow wherever there are latter day saints the last years of his life he be had consecrated to the service of his big people watchful and anxious of their welfare no years of his hia long life have been more busy than the last ones during health lie he visited his office five d days a week directing the work of clerks and doing a great deal him himself belf ilia amt president george Q cannon who was present at the death bed scene says that president woodruff had been beegun unusually well up to last tuesday the first day he did not go out driving wednesday he occupied I 1 ills his time in writing letters and mal malting cing entries in his journal wednesday evening lie he first be began bean an to feel uneasy about himself asle as ho was not well at all yettee yet the next day he was up and about as usual all the morning but at 2 in the afternoon he be was forced to go to to bed and he was ill all the afternoon lie ile was partially insensible during the afternoon but roused before 6 and a council of physicians was summoned by colonel trumbo shortly after that mrs woodruff naked asked him how lie he felt and he replied 1 I know that I 1 am pretty sick then he again relapsed into a condition of partial consciousness sirs mrs woodruff summoned me to the bedside at this time and said to him father here is brother cannon brother woodruff opened his eyes very wide and looked at me yes I 1 see him he said and he be closed his big eyes again and mur murmured inured 1 I wish I 1 could see asabel referring to one of his bous bons those were the last words he spoke nor did he again open his eyes so f far ar as I 1 know ile ho sank into tt a s state ate of coma and lay all night in that condition the doctors worked over him bim for a long time but it seemed to do no good at about 6 to in the morning I 1 went to his big room I 1 found him sleeping quietly there were no indications of sickness whatever his big pulse was strong and ills his body and head warm but from that time on he gradually failed there was no change to outward appearance but the pulse slowly faded until it ceased to beat his big faint breathing came to an end and he be was dead tears streamed down president cannons face during this recital so greatly was lie he affected |
