Show wheat and via aft pig fie food purdue purdice university has been conduct ins ing somo some experiments to ascertain the value of 0 wheat and corn as pig food this experiment had tor for its purpose a comparison of the feeding value ot 0 corn and wheat singly or la in combination when fed to growing fattening pigs this involved a consideration of several points of 0 importance all of which had bad a direct bearing on the experiment the pigs used were farrowed furrowed far rowed october 20 00 1896 were high grade chester whites and the product of two pigs that were full sisters each sow had nine pigs and the two lit litters term were very uniform and furnished unusually good material for experimentation they were placed in the soon after weaning sixteen of 0 the pigs or eight from each litter were divided into tour four lots of 0 four our pigs each consisting ot of three barrows and one sow in each lot the foods fed were as follows with skim milk corn wheat dry corn find and v wheat aalf and halt half wheat theat soaked ca the grain was ted fed whole in regular pig troughs resting on platforms in small email pig lots and in the case of at lot IV the wheat after being weighed out was soaked for twenty tour four hours in cold water up to the last of march after which it was boake only twelve to fourteen hours that the wheat might be ted fed unfermented in addition to the grain ration each lot was ted fed dally daily about 1 p in from 10 to 12 pounds of separator skim milk the summary of the experiments are as follows 1 pies Pigs fed exclusively shelled corn for or grain in cold weather made a gain per day of 0 ib 2 pigs fed whole wheat dry tor for grain made a gain of lbs ibs per day while those fed soaked whole wheat gained lbs ibs 3 pigs fed corn and wheat whole halt half and half gained lbs ibs per day 4 to produce one pound of live pork with shelled whole corn cost cents 6 5 to produce one pound of live pork with dry whole wheat cost cents while it cost cents it the same kind of 0 wheat was soaked 6 to produce one pound of 0 gain with the pigs fed a mixture of half and halt half whole shelled corn and whole wheat it cost cents 7 the influence of 0 the food on the organs and fleshy parts of at the body did not seem to be materially different 8 where corn was fed exclusively the bone was softer than where either wheat alone or corn and wheat were fed together |
