Show 1 BRYAN CHIEF GUEST Banquet of Young lens Democratic Club at Columbus 1 WAS A DOLLAR DINNER SILVER MUST BE ISSUE I NEXT CAMPAIGN + Judge Tarin Insists Tat There Must Be No Dicker or Trade for the Purpose of Securing the Vote of New York StateMr Bryan Speaks of Trusts 4 Columbus 0 JUly 7About 100 people attended the dollar dinner given by the Young Mens Democratic club ot Columbus In the auditorIum tonight I was the largest banquet which the local Democracy has had since that given In honor ot the sventsevcnth birthday ot the hate Judge Alien G Thurman In the same hal ten years ago The affair was strictly Democratic Demo-cratic In its simplel all classes being be-Ing represented There were also larse number ot ladles In the assemblage The chief guest Was Colonel William Jennings Bryan at the table with whom were also seated the Hon C T Callahan and George Fred Williams of Massachusetts Judge Tarvin Kentucky Ken-tucky the Hon Allen W Thuran of Columbus the toastmaster and a number num-ber ot other prominent In state politics poli-tics The entrance ot Colonel Bryan was greeted by an outburst of applause ap-plause which lasted until after be had I become seated Judge Tarvin president ot the League of Bimetallic Clubs of Ohio Yale re I spondeil to the toast Party and Prn clple In a VHrOlC specn ne ae nounced the attempts being made to relegate the silver question to the rear He Insisted that the Issue must be made as prominent In 1900 as It was In the Chicago platform The part must not tolerate any dicker or trade for the purpose ot obtaining the vote of New York He declared that the men in control con-trol of the Democratic organization in New York City were notoriously out ot sympathy with the Chicago platform and said It was known to all men that the organized wealth of the country owned the New York City organization body and soul 1 e Kn7a the efforts j ef-forts now being made by the organized wealth ot the country In Nett York In Chicago in Indianapolis to destroy the force and power of the Democratic part by mutilating the Chicago platform plat-form of 1896 Speech of Colonel Bryan Wheim Colonel Bryan was introduced there was another outburst ot applause that continued for several minutes When quiet had been restored he launched upon a discussion ot the issues is-sues ot the day in response to the toast Democracy Colonel Bran Insisted that there must be no retreat from the position taken in 1896 He spoke also of the trust question declaring that the trusts must be taken In hand by the federal government and recalled a recent statement state-ment of Attorney General Griggs to the effect that If anything 16 done to control con-trol the trusts It must be done by the states Colonel Bran maintained that the president through his attorney general could enforce the law now In existence but he declared that the Republican Hepublcan party had mortgaged itself to the trusts I to obtain money to carry on the lat election and said when the methods employed em-ployed In that election were understood under-stood no one can wonder that the attorney general Is undisturbed by the watering of stock the discharge ot traveling men and the extortion practiced prac-ticed on the consumer Mr Bryan deplored the taking of life In the Philippines and InsIsted that the people ot those Islands should be given the same freedom a had been promised to the Cubans The last speaker was George Fred Williams his toast being The Eastern Democrats ThE boom for the Hon George Fred lam of Massachusetts as a candidate can-didate for vice predent In 1900 launched by C T Callahan In his I I speh created a stir among the Ohio poltcians who have been hoping that I I this honor would be landed by Ohio |
