Show ADDRESS TO FRUIT GROWERS state S board of horticulture crof that tbt spraying Siryl be continued tile the cutali state board of 0 horticulture lins has issued the following address to ruit fruit growers it contains cont nias some valuable information it is of utmost importance that sprays sarar ing of apple trees be continued during the next five weeks in order to protect the late apples from the ranges of the second crop of 0 codlin moth worms the life history of the ilia codlin moth as given by entomologists and observed by proves that there are arc several broods of worms each year in northern and central utah the fir first a t brood for 1897 is just emerging from the apple and prepared to undergo the ilia transformation from worm to moth this change will be complete in about sixteen days from the t time me tile tha worm leaves the apple consequently from july to there will be a second crop of moth flying and depositing eggs forthe for the brood of worms to infest the late apples the ravages of this later brood of worms are noticeable in the great number of 0 worm holes in the sides of winter apples which while not utterly ruined are nevertheless rendered and unfitted for long keeping these imperfections it if allowed will always militate against it fruit tilt when placed in competition with the fruit of carefully cultivated orchards that have been properly sprayed many people have received the erroneous impression regarding the results of spraying through the statements state menta often published by commonly accepted authorities to the effect that two ox 01 three sprayings spray ings in the spring are sufficient this would be correct were it a physical possibility to MR every worm hatched in the first brood such however is impossible and in the most carefully sprayed orchards there will be enough worms escape the first spraying to produce a second brood in july sufficient to ruin the entire crop of winter apples the above suggestions are teaL by the experience of 0 the members of the state board ot of horticulture during the past four years and are confirmed by the most successful fruit growers grower in utah and elsewhere we therefore urge that all the late lata apples be sprayed with paris green at least three times between july 15 and august 13 15 |
