Dalton mine was first discovered at Marys vale the first fruits of this property caused great excitement in mining circles cir-cles in this city and for the very good reason that the ore that was brought in from this prospect for it was nothing noth-ing more than a prospect at that time was literally covered with gold in its native state The specimens too were not mere vest Docket samoles but were as large as a mans head and the cure stuff stuck out in pieces as large as pin heads and buck shot and when the owners of tho property spread these samples out on a table in their office the room was crowded all day long by people who came in to I satisfy their curiosity and to catch the i gold fever I The ore came from the grass roots 1 and according to the history of the discovery the spot was first pointed v out by J M Howell an experienced prospector and the day after it was located by Frank Dalton who found gold quartz at the very grass roots In fact the gold ore was found above the surface of the ground and with such a showing there was no wonder that people went WILD OVER THE DISCOVERY and it can readily be seen that when a company was formed for the development develop-ment of the mine that there was no I difficulty in disposing of the treasury I stock and that even the incorporators were besieged to part with portions of I their holdings which they very graciously I gra-ciously did at prices ranging from 60 j i cents to 1 a share Soon after the incorporation of the company ore shipments began to come I in and the almost fabulous returns from these consignments did not tend to abate the excitement in the least and for a while Dalton stock had the right of way in the offices of the stockbroker stock-Broker and the investment seeker As this was in thier winter time the ore had to be hauled down from the nine on rawhides and the arrival of every shipment was heralded with joy by those who were able to corral any of the stock The heavy expenses attendant upon the shibment of the ore however caused the company to consider the feasibility of erecting a mill in Bullion canyon just below the mine and it I vas not long before the contract was let for the plant and it was in operation opera-tion Disappointmentwas in store for the company as it was later on demonstrated dem-onstrated that the ore carried tellurium in excess and this could not be saved on the plates and after running but a shore time THE MILL WAS CLOSED DOWN Since that time it has not turned a wheel and it stands there today as a monument to the haste and inexperience inexpe-rience of the originators of the enterprise enter-prise but before it was discovered that the plant was a failure as far as the tellurium ores of the mine were concerned con-cerned the company had made arrangements ar-rangements to declare a dividend from the first nroduct of the plates When the first bricks of gold arrived however how-ever there was weeping and wailing in the camp of the Dalton crowd and the price of the stock of the company began gradually to decline Then it was that it was determined to shin the rich ore to this city as rapidly as possible and this resolution buoyed un the hearts of the stockholders stock-holders in consequence of which there was again a lively demand for Dalton but at a less figure than had first been asked for it At last the climax came and this arrived at the same time that the report re-port was received from the mine that the RICH ORE CHUTE HAD BEEN LOST and from that day to this there has been a steady decline in the stock although it has fluctuated considerably consider-ably during this period and especially so at the times when assessments became be-came due for the company which has changed management several times since its organization has levied in all about fine Irish dividends Still since the rich vein of quartz disappeared so mysteriously a large sum of monev has been expended in the development of the property and in the vain search for the pay streak and while there is a very encouraging showing in the upper workings at the present time the wonderfully rich ore streak has never been rediscovered J VJ iIi IIk unless it has been found by the lessees within the past few months And zret there is good reason to believe be-lieve that it will be found at no distant dis-tant day as this group embraces some of the choicest mineralized ground in that region and expert mining men unite in the opinion that at some time one of the greatest mines in the west will be found in the Dalton holdings Like all the mines of this character there has been a rumor in the air for the past few years that the body of high grade gold ore had BEEN PURPOSELY LOST and that the right parties could find it again and this report has gained considerable credence since the company com-pany leased the upper workings of the mine a few months ago to Frank Dalton Dal-ton and Dan Ferguson who are now in possession of and who are now operating op-erating in the old workings where the consignments of rich ore originally came from and it is believed in certain cer-tain circles that in the early springtime spring-time when the robins nest again that Ihese gentlemen will come to the front with ore shipments that will duplicate those that were made a short time after af-ter the discovery of the property In the accompanying illustration can be seen the upper workings of the Dalton shortly after the mine began to attract attention as a bonanza producer pro-ducer and it was at the mouth of the tunnel as shown in the picture that the first piece of quartz showing free gold was taken The log boarding house can also be seen on the left and it is here that Dalton and Ferguson are now housed for the winter and it is to be hoped that when they are heard from in the spring that they will emerge from their comfortable quarters quar-ters high up on the mountain with the news that they have struck the old ore chute and it is confidently believed be-lieved that such will be the case as they have already made a small consignment con-signment of ore that carried well in the yellow metal The oflicers of the company are still strong in the faith that in time THE MINE WILL REDEEM ITSELF and The Herald is informed that the directors are even now making arrangements ar-rangements to resume work in tunnel No 2 some time during the present month and it is intimated that within the past few months they have had some light as to the probable location of the ore body and have reason to believe that with but little more work they will be able to place the property on a paying basis once again There are a number of very promising promis-ing prospects in the immediate vicinity vicin-ity of the Dalton that are bound to come to the front as producers at no distant day Among the number is the Aurora which adjoins the Dalton on the south Considerable work has been done dn the development of this property prop-erty and in some of the workings fine bodies of ore have been exposed which carry from 10 to 90 in gold and way up in silver to the ton and it is understood un-derstood that it is the intention of the Aurora company to do a large amount of work on this ground the coming season The Eagle also a new producer and a new discovery is one of the promising promis-ing prospects that is liable to make a name and fame for itself during the coming year and although this property prop-erty has been developed only by a few feet of work it already shows a promising prom-ising ledge of gold bearing quartz in which the yellow metal exists in a native na-tive state Just over the divide from the Dalton Dal-ton mine in what is known as Horse Heaven is located the Wedge mine which promises to develop into one of the richest producers in the south This i also a surface proposition and as the ledge is a very wide one and the ore high dn grade it is believed that with the coming of spring the Wedge will become a heavy and regular shipper ship-per There are a large number of valuable properties in the Marysvale country and now that the Rio Grande Western road has almost reached that camp it is reasonable to believe that within a few months there will be a number of properties there which will become producers Already there are a number num-ber of mines there that will make consignments in the spring Among the number being the Webster the > l t l < Chrystal and the Clyde which whenever I when-ever desired could send in a stead stream of mineral wealth |
