| Show WHAT DEVELOPS THE WEST Samuel Merrill exmayor of Chey anne is in the city to attend the annual meeting of the stockholders of Morri son Merrill Co of which he is president IdeaL Mr Merrill Is one of the most substantial sub-stantial citizens of Wyoming He ha large property Interests in Salt Lake as well and he believes very fully in the future o the city I do not believe be-lieve that the people here appreciate fully the benefits that will come to Salt Lake and Utah from the construction o the new line to the coast said he I have observed that every big city west of the Mississippi has bee built up by the development of the country west of it This was particularly true of Omaha and Denver In the same manner Salt Lakes greatness can be I added to by the opening of new territory terri-tory that will be tributary to it This new railroad ought to meet with the encouragement of every citizen who has II the welfare of the state or even his own selfish benefits at heart Its completion com-pletion will mark the beginning of the states greatest prosperity I There is not a citizen in the state but wants the state improved its resources developed its industries encouraged Whether they realize the importance of this new road or consider i what it takes to open up new country and make Salt Lake a larger distributing I center than it Is may be questioned But i is certain that no one is actually ac-tually hostile to the undertaking unless he is Interested in the schemes of C P Huntington who is very anxious it is said to have the project abandoned |
