Show HAVOC OF + HURRCANE Great Damage Wrought By Rushing Wincs In Og enCLOSE t CLOSE CALL FOR somE f A 0C LI FOM ITS OUNATO I Narrow EscDa of Jvd Eccle OliildrenMany B idg I juredtors Ravages I Davis County Considerable Intensely Cold and High Wind at Provo + f Special to The Herald Ogden Dec Daylight yesterday morning showed Ogden very much disheveled dis-heveled in appearance The havoc wrought by the storm was fully a great as foreshadowed In the partial report of the storms ravages appearing in yesterdays Herald By rare god fortune no serious casualties appear o have occurred and the loss to property is more equally distributed than was the case In the great Wind storm of 186 when the Kies l warehouse collapsed col-lapsed and was burned The premises of A B Hayes near the south end of the Washington avenue car line were damaged to the extent of 200 The barn and windows were wrecked and a bugg broken Mr Hayes was endeavoring endeav-oring to drIve to the city when the wInd caught the vehicle and spun it over andover and-over several times Later Mr Hayes attempted the journey afoot street car traffic having been suspended and waa roughly used by the wind which seemed seem-ed tQ be exceptionally severe in that portion of the city A chimney of the Sacred Heart Academy Acad-emy blew down carrying the gable end of the structure with it and scattering bricks and mortar about the floors The Ice house of Balantyne McCune a big structure 60x80 feet was reduced to a heap of kindling wood Close Call For Children A chimney on the house of David Eccles blew down about midnight and crashed rough the kitchen tearing a big hole bursting the water pipes and causing the place to be flooded A portion por-tion ot the chimney fell onto the other portion of the house which was a story higher than the kitchen This crashed down into a bedroom scattering debris over the bed of some or the Eccles chi dren A house on Fourth street belonging to Brainard Hitter and occupied by 11 Marshall was demolished Chamberlains barn on Third street succumbed likewise and 111 Lunds barn in the same neighborhood was leveled Southwels hal had a lot of roofing torn off and a plate glass window smashed Craig BlOS addition to their canning factory was leveled and a lot of roofing roof-ing torn off the older par Theo Schansenbachs barn was leveled level-ed and that of Alex Brewer was moved for hIm The front of Rankins livery stable caved in and additional damages were done to the Chapman house after the first damage reported in yesterdays Herald There was hardly a building but suffered suf-fered damage in some degree The Presbyterian mission church on foundationS Thirtyfirst street was lifted from its foundation-S S1vered I Bae etA et-A great deal of damage was done to the buiding of the state industrial school In the middle of the night the superIntendent became alarmed for the safety of the inmate and they Were removed from the dormitory to the basement where they spent a very uncomfortable night and in great fear that the building would collapse A strange thing happened on the Shot Line between here and Sat Lake A freight train had an empty I box ca between two loaded cars The wind caught the box car and whirled It off the track and cleared the right of way so that by coupling the two coal cars together the traIn proceeded with very little delay The storm was at its height just as the performance of 192 was over and as the crowds left the opera house they caught the full force of i Hats were blown off by the score and went chasing down Twentyffh street a thick as rabbis at Seco The wind continued all day yesterday and last nIght but its velocity WaS not so great as the night before though I the cold was much more intense I |
