Show GONE TO REST pros pres W R smith of centre ville passed away last monday evening at tuesday evenings news contains the following about the life and death of president wm win R smith william R smith president of the davis stake slake died at his home in ancen cen treville last night at after a long and severe illness resulting 0 from stricture of the bowels bowel S wm win R smith was born near farmersville Farmers ville ontario canada august alth 1826 Gand and was therefore in ill his big sixty eighth year his father was a native of the new eng states slates but bu i removed to canada where he be married mary reed mother of the deceased who was the laughter daughter of major reed of the british army pres smith was the youngest of nine children and was left an orphan in his early childhood fortunately he found a good home with a quaker family by the name of parish from the time he be was three years old until lie was sixteen he was kindly cared for by this good family in the fall of 1837 the parishes with three of their sons and their families came to the united states settling in stark county illinois about this time lime large numbers of the members of the church were movin moving 9 into and building up the city of nau and it ii was then that the deceased became interested in mormonism in 1841 he ha was baptized into the church and during the same year several of the parishes did the same thing af ter joining the the church mr smith took up his residence in nauvoo where he be remained for a year and a half during the whole of which time however ke he was in a feeble condition tio n from frequent and severe attacks of chills and fever at the expiration of this time he returned to stark county where he edg engaged aged in stock raising until 1849 when in company with austin grant he started for the rocky mountains mounta ins arriving here the same year in 1850 he went to california where lie he spent considerable time in stock and min in ing 0 business made some money and returning 0 to utah settled in centre ville where he continued in the stock business and where he be made his home up to the time of his death lie ile subsequently took large herds of stock to california where lie he disposed of them advantageously in the spring no of 1855 he was ordained bishop of centreville Cen treville and in 1857 was made captain of the carson colony which left carson valley near the middle of sept and arrived in salt lake city during the following e month after a very successful journey president smith resumed ills his duties over the centreville Cen treville ward and under tinder his immediate direction they moved during the utah war of that period 1858 to spanish fork bu but t returned to their homes the year following after peace had been declared in III tile fall of 1859 he be was elected a member of the legislative council to fill the term of charles charle 9 C rich ile he was subsequently elected three times a member of the house of representatives and afterwards in 1878 he was again elected to a seat in the council in 18 1874 4 lie he was elected probate judge of davis county and held that office for nine years vears in june 1877 he be was appointed president of the davis stake a position lie he beld until tile the end of his busy and useful life I 1 he le also served as a missionary abroad and was at home a most ardent and faithful worker in fill all of his offices of trust both civil and ecclesiastical he exhibited untiring energy excellent judgment and first class ability he was wag ever solid conservative con serve known as one of the territory ile he loaves le ves men of the a large and well respected family to mourn liis ids deatle |
