Show city for the benefit of the people in our as well as in other cities in our county who are incorporated and wish to we clip an editorial from last sundays SuD days herald which treats on this point and reads as follows we learned that in some remote places there here is an attempt being made to destroy the town athons that have been organized in of public order this is rather surprising and is evidence of a spirit of lawlessness or a lack of good judgement jud gement in a small village or a scattered farming district such in corporations fire are perhaps not necessary but in every place where people have bogre gated in sufficient numbers to form a town it seems us that the most orderly and progressive among them would consider some kind of municipal government essential it was with this view that the laws authorizing the organization of towns and their incorporation were enacted it is possible of course that some of them may have been conducted in a manner that displeases the inhabitants and that good people may think desirable but we should think they would hesitate before endorsing to so destructive a measure it is movement it is in opposition to progress and the spirit of the times the people in any town or city have it in their power to institute reforms in tile the gover government rim ent of the place the voters are the ruling power if the officers elected or appointed do not suit them they can make a cl change ange and institute the policies they deem necessary to do this would be far better and more sensible than to endeavor to break up the corporation pwe we understand that those who are moving for represent that the people in many towns and cities of utah are taking steps in the same direction and that among those towns and cities are salt lake provo prove ogden lehi lebi st george nephi spring city manti fillmore etc if that is the story somebody is playing upon the credulity of the citizens we have hear dof no such InO movement in any of the cities specified and the very fact that such a tale is being told is evident that unreliable and untrustworthy persons are at the back of the scheme our friends who feel concern over this matter should understand that no city or town can be without first a petition in writing to the city council signed by not less than one half of the electors of the city as shown by last years registration list second the publication once a week for four weeks in ill a newspaper or by posting notices ot of an election to determine the question third the votes of three abree fourths of the electors in favor of po ration thus it will be seen that no bract on can accomplish the work of destruction truc tion but that a large majority of the voting citizens must be converted to the movement before it can lave have a chance of success it is not likely that so Is large rge a proportion of the people gouid support a movement tor for dissolution unless it was realy the proper thin thing to do under the circumstances the friends of law slid and order may rely on an this but all the same they should not allow the enemy to steal a march ou on them 1 f |
