| Show TEMPLE PRESENTS GIVEN by the hawaiian saints consisting of two kahi lis a table and one hundred and sixty fans editor CLIPPER i thinking 0 that a few lines from the San sandwich dwiel islands might prove inhere interesting sting to tle the readers of 01 the CLip cupryk pirn I 1 herewith send the following As many who read this have no doubt lately attended the dedicatory services of the salt lake temple I 1 would beg leave to remind them that among the many beautiful things to be seen there is also some things 0 from the hawaiian blands something thid ta useful 1 something 0 orn ornamental also something both useful and ornamental na im and all preeminently pre eminently of these isla islands ills and this race of people at the general conference of the saints of these islands held at lale laie last oct a proposition was unanimously sustained by all present to tile the effect that a nice present ranging in W from to in value be sent to the salt lake temple in in time lime for its dedication as a token of remembrance from the saints in these islands expressive of their faith and interest in the great work of temple buil building din g for the salvation of the living and the redemption of the dead and there and then a general committee and committees subcommittees sub bub wore were selected to carry out the wish of the saints As a final result of this two royal kabilis Ka hilis a magnificent table and about beautiful fans were prepared and sent in due time I 1 did not have the privilege of see id aug any of these on account of being off on oil one of the other islands at the time they were sent away so will not attempt to give much of a di of them suffice it to a say y they need to be seen in order to appreciate their beauty for it can not be properly told on paper the pair of kabilis is simply ornamental and are characteristic of hawaiian lawai iau royalty they are orna ments for the corner comer of a room and stands about ten feet high their stands and sticks made of hawaiian hard bard woods and highly bicy im lily polished cost 80 while the work of making the feather plumes was done by the members of the relief society of the honolulu branch this work alone if hired done one would probably have cost or more as there are feather plumes in each kahili the table was made here in honolulu and it is truly a marvel of beauty also made of hawaiian hard bard woods highly polished and containing more than separate pieces its first cost here was which 1 in I itself is evidence that it belong to tile the common class of tables the fans were made in a variety of shapes and styles and would therefore vary in value but at a low estimate were easily warth one dollar each on an aberge they were I 1 I 1 however io wever all made by the native sisters of the lale laie and kalla kahana branches and therefore the only cash expended on them was for the libbon thread and for coloring matter to dye them different colors the material of which they were made is a certain part of the bamboo caric cane and it is subjected to various processes of preparation before it is really ready for use A good deal of time and labor aud and considerable money las has been spent on these various articles but all has been given freely and cheerfully so far us as I 1 have been able to learn and I 1 trust they have fulfilled the purpose for which they were sent manthey may they continue to add beauty and utility to that sacred place the throughout t the various islands of of tile the group donated liberally con sider hig their impoverished condition towards defraying all the expenses so that was received by the general eom committee cittee all this sum would have b ve been expended by the time the present readied its destination had full duty duly been collected at San Fraucisco but I 1 do not think such was tile case however ever I 1 have not yet learned definitely as to that but should there be any funds remaining after all expenses are paid it will also go to tile temple 1 I F r HONOLULU april 21 24 2 1 1893 1803 |
