Show GARDEN CITY BUMPS description of garden city much sickness kilass mines undeveloped editor CLIPPER As I 1 promised iome time ago to send bome items I 1 do so being my first opportunity having been requested to give tile alic names and occupations of people now in garden city formerly of davis county I 1 do so with pleasure there are these robert calder our bishop and family john alien and family geor george ge whittington and nd family seth dustin three of his 1113 sons and their families mrs mra sprouse Spro whose maiden name was fackrell all from bountiful also mr simms the miller from cen treville trey illo and his family the occupation of the people of garden city is principally fanning and raising a few horses and cattle there is only one man here who owns sheep our little settlement numbers about two hundred and forty souls of whom the larger portion are children drin we have had bad considerable sickness here this winter among a alie children some claimed it was diphtheria theria while others thought it was putrid sore throat it continued a long ion time terminating in three deaths since this disease left us its about three weeks quite a number of grown people have had bad a touch of the la a grippe being one of them there is however very little sickness ne s here now I 1 am pleased to say we have had an unusually unus ally open winter which probably is one of the causes of this thia sickness we have had only a few days sleighing in the valley all winter until the recent storm it commenced snowing jan and has been snowing more or less ever since the storm has not yet cleared away we have over a foot of snow now on the level in the valley the lake bear lake froze over a few weeks ago lasting about twenty four hours when a wind came up and the thin ice was soon broken to pieces again revealed reve revealing aliD the beautiful blue water it is now trying very hard to freeze over the second tims time I 1 have been thinking that perhaps a description of the lake I 1 have just mentioned and the valley in which it is located would be of interest to some odthe readers of the CLIPPER A great many people in salt lake valley ralley think that bear lake valley is one of the worst places in which a person could live often comparing it to the north pole or iceland or some other frozen up place they think that any person who would locate in such a place has a soft oft place in his head bead and that his head needs fixing now I 1 can call assure you louthis 2 this is a mistaken idea we have men who are as smart as there are arc to be found in any other portion of utah and as fine a valley as a man wishes to see of course it is a few degrees colder here in the winter than in salt lake valley but the summers are arc much more inore pleasant here imagine if you can call a range of mountains dotted clotted here and there with kith small patches of cottonwood cotlon wood trees whose eastern slope descends gradually to the gravelly shore of a beautiful lake of clear blue water and upon picturesque flats of tile the lower ben benches clies which have but a slight elevation above the level of the lake are located beautiful little settle settlements menta the inhabitants of which are as sociable and hospitable a set of people as a man ever meets bear lake is about awen twenty ty miles long by about eight wide about halt half of which is in utah and half in idaho the principal part of the valley is however bobev er in idaho the settlements are as follows laketown Lake town located at the south end of the lake meadowville Meadow ville back from the lake three miles borsuch or such a matter garden city ou on the lake shore these are arc in utah the settlements in idaho are arc as follows going north from garden city Fi shaven st charles bloomington paris liberty ovid newman on the west side of the valley on oil the cast going north are arc dingle bennington and georgetown it will be remembered that the lake is only twenty miles in length while the valley is over fifty and only enly laketown Lake town garden city Fi lihaven haven and st charles are arc located upon its shores shore on the east side of the hie lake are a series of low rolling hills bills which come down r abruptly to the lake shore leaving no places available tor for settlements the lako lake abounds with fish feih and its waters are blue and clear with tile the exception ext eption of times timea whoa when big storms cause the white caps cap to roll high and wash the shores I 1 think this valley with such a hue fine lake which is without a doubt the roost most picturesque in utah is as fine a place for summer resorts as I 1 ever saw about half a mile north of the north end of the lake are arc located some warm springs similar to the warm springs north of salt lake city last summer a bath house and hotel were built there for the accommodation mo nio dation of those wishing to visit and bathe in them it is my opinion that the time is near at hand when a mining colu camp P will be established within a few mil miles es of our little settlement a number of very encouraging prospects are being worked vigorously and some have been worked over two years they range from about two to eight or nine miles west of garden city they are principally copper and silver with some lead and gold old experienced miners they the prospects are on the park city beu belt of mineral I 1 have no doubt that the time will come within a few years that our mines will be dually as good as those in park city which is unquestionably the best mining camp in utah these prospects are not only in the garden city hills but extend over twenty miles north of here some ome of the mines north of here are now sacking backing ore three car loads were shipped last season the main trouble at present is that the prospects are owned by the farmers and men who lack means to push asli them what we want is capitalists to come here with money to push the work and then their reward is sure we look forward to this time knowing it Is s only a matter of time it is one of the finest places a man could ask for a mining camp to be in wagon roads are already built in most of the canyons so RO that ore can be hauled out without much expense in that way H A GREM GREEN CITY UTAH feb ath 1893 |
