Show 1 1 A description i 1 or of honolulu ulu as aa written by irvin P fisher fiaher to a friend fr lend well as aa you asked me to tell you what it ia that makes honolulu seem m 1 ab so charming cha rifling to it all who visit that aw I 1 I 1 ai will 11 endeavor to mention a few af jl I conceive to lie the designating the theca capital of thi tins al little litile k kingdom in adom tife the paradise of the pacific there ard are liu numerous reasons reason but flie lue principal ones are arc probably its b beautiful location and surroundings co coupled W with ath the advantages of a fine fihe tropical ell climate ingate which it possesses T j after one lias has been tossed about anthe wide waste of blue maeis for foi A we out of laud ot 0 any living thing almost itis it is indeed a r refreshing e sight to ones longing eyes to jo be ba aI a bleto letb rest them on a beautiful c ity city almast buried in tropical trees shrubs and flowers which are fresh and green the year round A cit city y stretching out to your right 0 for four miles and there abrupt ij hemmed in by the rugged remains of an old volcanic crater which stands out into the edge of the cal mighty lity ocean like a huga fortress stretching to tile the left for 3 miles with a beautiful calm calin bay in allf front and the ragged koolau range of bits with its deep gorges always green for a background back grou ground u d then tile the little crater known as punchbowl Punch Panch bowl standing like a guard just back of the center of tat lh city tile the spires of the church estin ship masts in the locks docks the tall cocoanut coco anut palms and the majestic royal roal palms all add effect to the picturesque surroundings roun dings trees shrubs flowers and creepers from almost every other tropical climate have also been transplanted here to beautify tile homes of rulers and those of her wealthy citizens many varieties of palms also many varieties of pines are to be seen here besides these we find tile the spreading far banyan the pride of india the tamarind the I 1 bread fruit tree mango trees arid and their delicious fruits and others too numerous to ment mention meitlon lon the shrubs and flowers that thal are native to these islands of them the melvea pelves would be insufficient to give the desired variety and contrast but united with so many imported kinds the result is indeed beautiful to io gaze upon to the people 1 living iving here thi 13 8 all becom es commonplace but to visitors most everything is novel and beautiful the varieties of races of people and mixtures of races to pe be met with here is of itself a novel sight besides the true hawaiian race we occasionally meet with naive aives from samoa the fiji ids and from the philippine ids ot of the asiatic races we have thousands of chines and japanese and some arabians also representatives from all the leading european countries particularly the portuguese of whom there are ma many ny hundreds of men I 1 women and children then such an intermingling of all these races you yon can hardly imagine some negroes and a few with the blood of our american indians indiana in their veins when I 1 left home I 1 had a very poor e conception of the sandwich I 1 islands and their people and little lid did I 1 think of finding such a city as honolulu here still less did I 1 expect to find the degree of civilization that is really to be met with throughout these islands Hono lulus streets though not w wide ide aud and straight like those of our capital city S L are nevertheless good hard thoroughfares lighted by electricity traversed by miles of street railways railway and water mains and the telephone wires are innumerable and more hacks and hacklen find employment than in any other city of like population on the globe I 1 should judge tho the ire fire department has live five ata stations distributed throughout the different parts of tile the city and the efficiency fici ency of their force I 1 think will at least compare favorably fayora bly with that of salt lakes for the past year or two honolulu like salt lake city is sometimes menaced with a water famine and like the latter city also is afflicted with two much bad whiskey and those kindred vices that are arc always found where that cursed beverage Is freely used it is however a much quieter and more peaceful city than one would naturally expect to find it one thing that would greatly enhance anee its value as a home for an A I 1 american or gar 0 peytr would be give it cable connection w with sn sat francisco that we might have the worlds news reported to us morning instead every ery of once in 1 10 days or two weeks as is now low the case caie i |
