In te the frs first gt pla place but al all allwill wi will agee agree that there are times when it a positive ne necessity ity to remedy some som truble trouble et us first take up what is known a as Intensification ir If the ha has not been carried far cared ar enough in the developer or it if too cool a developer has been used the pIcture on the glaS glass wl will have a weak ea transparent Q appear pe nub anc ad and should a print be made from it the wIll be weak eak and lifeless h Is t the kind of n negative te that re require requires quire quires Al All such negatives hav have plenty time on the epe but have no net been carried ear enough In te the developer A negative that is thin from underexposure muSt not be Ue muS mIstaken for a a negative tat that intensifying for it would do no good od to tr try to wak work up a negative tt that ha has ben been underexposed 11 In the the case of the underexposed oS negative it will b be found that the are ve very dak dark while t the sadO ae are tr tranS tranSparent parent with no detail in them hem The In intensifying solution should be mae made up In two bottes ad and about the easiest to understand and hadle handle is made as follows of mercur mercury 60 gain grains Bromide of potassium 60 gin grains Water 6 ounces soda 1 1 ounce Water 4 ouncE ounces The negative shoud should be waed washed fr abut about half an hur hour and then place placed in ina ina a dih dish or try tray containing enough of the A solution thoroughly to cover the negative Te The Ua tray should be rocked back ad and forth until ever every par part of the negative ha has turned a cream or mik milk color Then Thea take the negative from the solution and rinse wel well after ter which place in another try tray containing enough ot of the B solution to cover th the plate Rock the tray back and forth until aU all the mn milky appearance ha has dIsappeared and the negative has returned to its forer former clor color It mI will be nw now to waS waSh the negative again thoroughly I It wi will now be seen that the whole appearance of the neg nega tivo is more snappy If the first trial does not intensify the negative quie quite enough a second trial may be made and a a third and so on until the re required required Intensity has ben been accomplished After intensifying the negative shoud should be washed thoroughly about one hour then drIed It sometimes happen happens that a a negative my may be carrie carried too far in the eloD ing If this i is the ce case the negative wi will look too blac black al alt over oven when held up and examined by light coming through i it I If a print b be take taken from this negative it wi will require quiE quite a along long time to do the printing and after the print is arade its appearance will willbe be anything but pleasing from the fat fact that it will have ave a snowy look look It wU will b be necessarY to reduce this neg nega tye tire to a proper de degree ee For that pur the following solutions ae are used ot of potu potassium 1 ounce Water 16 ounces of soda 1 ounce Water 16 ounces Place the negative in a a ty tray contain containIng lag Ing enough of B to cover it wel well and add to i it a little at a time ju just a smal small quantity of A A The more of A that is used used the faser faster will be the re reduction D Do not haten hasten te the work too ducton rapidly however as there i is dager danger of going too far Solution A should have an n opaque paper wrapped abut about the botte bottle a as i It is sensitive to the light It is very necessary that the plate should hould I ver b be washed thoroughly after this treatment treatment Wash for at l least ast one hour hourin in running water or i If changed from one tray tray to another give it a treatment c can be made while the negative Is wet wih with very satisfactory results results Take a tuft of absorbent cotton coton and dip it into the solution d desired ad and tuch touch only those part parts of the plate that need improvIng Care must be exercised or an irregular streak may show hw aroun around the place worked on Sometimes the he negatives may b be too yellow This is caused by not using enough ot of the sulphite of soda in te the developer To remedy thi this it will 1 be benec necessary ar to clear them up wih with what Is kow known a as the clearIng solution One might thin think this color in tive would make no difference but it is quie quite a drawback to getting a good print Te The more yellow there is in the negative the more of a chalk chalky look there wi will be to the print This yellow ct cast In the negative is sometimes caused by the water in which It is washed beinS beIng exceptionally Impure A negative may be taen taken from the fixing bat bath and have ju just the correct tone or color and pl placed ced under a tap of ira im impure pure water to wash ad and it will change color in few moments a very verv Te The clearing solution is made as follows Water IC 16 ounces Alum pulverized i ounce SUlphuric aed acId 1 dram Place the negative in a tray and pour pourover oye over it the clearing solution and rock back and forth for a few minutes when it will be fund found tat that the color will change for the better Ater After clearing It wi will be only n necessary e ry to rn rinse the plate wel well when it may be hug hung u up to dry dr When the negatives are dr dry it should be the first care ot of te the operator to go ga over them carefully to see if they are i is to see If there are ay any pinholes caused by dus dust which may have by some accident not been remove removed from t th plate before e ex or before development development It If it is foUnd that there are are pInhole pinholes they should be removed by the te use of a asmal smal small camels camels hair brush They are know known among artists as pencil brushes A No 2 wi will be found to give the bet best satisfaction for this purpose gye Te The agent to be used for removing or plug ing the pinholes is what is kown known as India ink ink and can n be obtained either in a liquid or In stick form fonn Start in by moistening te the end of the sUck stick and rubbing that tere there ae are s so my many dif different ferent ad and brands on te the market it would sem seem 10 to b be ao almost a a holes holestak hopeless tak task ad and more so when we hear ech each manufacturer claing claiming hi his product to tob tobe b be te the ver very best It be said saidi that te the prIntIng out pa i is the pape paper tI that at the Image Is printe printed out to a ful full depth and after afterward ward tone toned to te the proper dl di divided yide vided into two wo clase classes vl viz ad and gelatin Te The developing out pa paper pa per pets are toe those papers where the image 1 Is developed out something lIke te the de of the negative This being te the cae case of cure course the frt first ting thing to decide on is which is wanted a print lag ing out paper per or a developing out paper We shall conder consider a printing out paper by way of i ii Such paper cn can b be ob tamed fo from ay any tok house in inthe the countI country Beor Before be begin n printing it is neE necessary a to hae have two or three printing fa frames TheS These should be Sa sante size ie interiors a as the negatives Te The printing frame is sm m ply n a shallow box wih with a back fitting In wih with two for pressing it Into tato close contact wit with te the negative Place the negative in the frame with the film side le up or toward you Now te take a shee sheet of f paper front te the yu box it comes in inand Inand and and place the film side of the paper In contact wih with te the film of the negative Place the tac bac back in the fr frame and pres press the springs into poSition Te The fm film aide of the h paper is and i is ely easily recognIzed After the he ne and paper have have bee been placed t the frame me they are ready fOl for printing ThIs shoud should be done in the shae shade or if in inthe the tho direct rays of the sun one or two thIc e of tIe tissue paper should cover the opening pening I If the te tissue paper 1 Is preferred al all that is is to glue the tissue al all around the frame over the negatives and then place the frame out on the window sU sill or facIng the sun I If the printing 1 Is ee done In the shade no paper r wl will be needed Go over oer the negatives ver very carefully with a camels har hair dust brush and remove al all du dust and lint jUt just before fore fn fixing negative and paper r t to the trae frame Te The prints should Pi remain In the frame until they ae are abut about two shades darker tan than wante wanted In the fn fin finIshed print print Tey They ca can be examined at atay ay any time during fr first thIng to do in toning a glos gloss print is to get i it into such such i con condition dion that it wi will not curl Take 1 a smooth bottom tray and pour into it water enough to coyer cover the pur bottom to toa toa a depth ot of about Inch side the tho printa Into th this fa face down one at ata ata a time and pc pack th m tightly one on top ot of another all over the bottom ot of the try tray in an irregular mH mass Be sure ure that eh each print is thoroughly hy wet b be before fore placIng another on top ot of i it ad addo and do not plo pile the prints dIrectly on top of each other but let only a pat part ot of otone one cover the one beneath It it Thi This wl will ge give a an Irregular heap and prevent their curling oye over each each other at the edge edges When en al minutes Go trough through thi this wane washing proc process sS agin again and again giving the prInts at least 6 six cha changes es of fresh wate water Te The better way to do tW this is to bave have two washing shing trays nd and to hadle handle prints lints fro from oe one to another Te The print prints are then ready for the ton tonIng in Ing bath which is made a as follows Water ounces G SnIt Salt grains aIns 3 Saturated solution acetate soda ounce Anisto oto gold 1 dram Then add of a saturated solution of bor boras enough to tur turn red litmus paper blue in n about fye five minutes This bath should be made and let stand for sevel several hour hours before used Make ake it one da day and u use it the ue next Place the prints in this bath one at a atme time and do not put in more tha than c can I Ibe be easly easily attended to or streaked tones my b b the result I It should take about eight minutes for each print to tone in thIs bath I If it requires a longer tm time add enough of the gold to bring the see speed of the bath up to that point Tone In thi this bat bath until the tone wanted ha has been reached then take out and place in clear water until all l are toned After toning give them two changes of fre fresh h water after which the pictures are ready for the fixing bath This consists of of soda to t test fifteen gins grains by the o hydrometer Place aU all the prints into the bath one oneat oneat at a a time and leave them in i it for ff fit teen minutes when they should be washed In running water ater for one hour Tey They are then Tedy ready for mounting Yellow indicate too much bra borax jn in te the gold bath 2 PInk whites shw show too little bora borax in the gold bat bath 3 Te The baths bt both gold and hypo should be at a a temperature ot of about 65 dees degrees 4 The sal salt in the gold bath is to restrain the high lights ad and prevent them from fro and al lowing the shadows and high liht lights a to tone up evenly together 5 The gold is the toning agent or that Te whIch hange the tone of the prInt print 6 The Te acetate of soda g gives es richer tone 7 Te The Ted red litmus paper aper soken spoken of for testing th the gold bath i is a a paper which wi will change to a blue if it itis is put Into a an aki alkali Tere There Is alo also a blue litmus paper which will change to toa toa a red if put Into an acid solution Either
