Show m RAN R WAS A to catch 1 arce ree coinage votes for cleveland thomas M patterson gives an account of the committee proceedings at the last democratic national convention vilas mcalier son and bayard represented cleveland favored it a vote getter denver sept 1 I the rocky mountain news today published an editorial in which mr thomas M patterson editor of the newspaper gives a full account 0 of the proceedings 0 of the subcommittee of the committee on resolutions at the last democratic convention relating to the financial plank the committee subcommittee sub consisted of mr bayard senators mcpherson gon vilas and daniel john D C atkins athina of tennessee s L F garrard of georgia mr M r jones of missouri Misso url and mr patterson Pal terson of colorado mr air patterson says when the plank plan was first read and analyzed I 1 suggested gest e d that it was uncertain and gave cave loom to cavil about its meaning incan lne to remove this uncertainty I 1 suggested that the word free be inserted before the words coinage of 0 gold and silver etc I 1 distinctly stated that I 1 would be content to omit the ratio for such coinage leaving that to congress what I 1 did want was waa the democratic party clearly and unequivocally committed to true bi senators vilas and mcpherson opposed this and so did mr bayard lach isach rave gave ills hla reason it was not that they were opposed to free coinage on the contrary they favored it but the word tree free as applied to coinage was so lipple liable to be misunderstood in the east and northeast that it would through this ignorance lose the party many votes which should not be allowed mr bayard was particularly earnest in asserting ills his fealty to silver and told in graphic and pathetic language the services lie ho had performed for the white metal mr patterson says that after considerable sid erable discussion mr air atkins a professed bimetallist offered the following substitution for the monetary plank we hold to the use of both gold and silver as the standard money of a f the lite country and to the coinage of bo both th gold and silver for the owners thereof without discriminating against either metal or charge tor for fill mintage niage etc 1 I realized in a moment continues mr patterson that it was a declaration for free coinage as clear and emphatic as though the word tree free were used a dozen times b but lit before committing myself I 1 turned to senators vilas and mcpherson and mr air bayard and asked what do you think of it gentlemen they indicated they wished to consider it lie ile then conferred with mr daniel who approved of the substitution and who said in response to the assertion that the other side would not accept it yes they will they are honorable gentlemen and when they say they tavor lavor tree free coinage and would declare openly tor for it but that the word tree free Is dangerous and would loss lose the party many votes in the east and northeast they mean it this amendment avoids their only objection and they will adopt it mr air daniel then urged the acceptance a 0 Z the substitution and was waa bucit surprised when senator vilas announced that they had decided against accepting it claiming that thai the original plank wj 3 a declaration for tree free silver mr air atkins also voted against tile substitution mr patterson states that mr walt ney came to the committee room and in III answer to a question was told of the eiron effort to have the word free inserted in the monetary plank mr air patterson continues lie l studied the proposition a moment or two and in a very decided tone exclaimed flats I a vote getter they should not object to that let roe me talk with them about it ile he called senators vilas and mcpherson aside and talked with them quite earnestly tor for tully fully live five minutes tie returned apparently quite disappointed and salu saiu lits its no use they object to the word free bebau because se it Is a very objectionable word in the t he northeast in connection with money and to adopt li it would lose the democracy mccrac V that thai section of the country 1 I then explained the atkins amendment w whereupon hereupon he again said in most emphatic language they will certainly consent to that I 1 think they will a vote getter I 1 will talk to them about it again he ha held an earnest conversation with the senators when he returned looking more crestfallen than at first he be remarked its no use they will consent to lo no change the fight before the full committee was rep repined cited in the press at the time I 1 i advocated the amendment inserting the word free in the plank mr bayard and senator vilas made several earnest speeches against it the rhe amendment was lost I 1 carried the amendment into the convention it was again defeated I 1 became convinced that senators vilas and mcpherson with ex secretary of state bayard represented mr air Clev elands vi views and that they fully understood each other ithe money plank was a trap avith w bich to eaten free coinage democrats tor for mr ca eveland cleveland I 1 made up roy MY mind I 1 would not walk into the trap with my eyes open and so as soon as pos bible I 1 repudiated repudiated mr air cleveland and did what I 1 could for gen weaver |
