| Show 7 I 1 4 1 N 4 1 1 1 11 1 7 GETTING READY FOR A FIGHT j city hall resembles I 1 a fort appointing officers and threatens to take possession tomorrow old force has the police headquarters barricaded barricades Barrica ded and guarded but fifteen men are on patrol duty armed with clubs and revolvers omaha AVE aug 12 it now looks as it a conflict Is inevitable beti between veen the omaha police force and the A P A faction which claims authority under a re recent cent law to appoint a new force L last a s tn night indications were that a compromise ase I 1 r 0 m was probable but the efforts of 0 citizens who deplore the present strife to get the A 11 A board to submit the controversy to the supreme I 1 court were of no avail the A P A board la Is appointing us its force tonight to night and asserts they will take posse possession aslon of the city property by force wednesday it was W 15 alaio WL W L filially fic fici lally ally this morning that those cc v the present policemen and firemen who did not notify the new board by wednesday morning that they would huld hold themselves subject to the order ot the new board would receive little consideration when the new board commenced to discharge the duties ot of the office the police headquarters resembled a barracks today to day the disquieting rumors which are flying around according to the police is the basis for the precautions taken in protecting the headquarters front from an assault the door leading from the office into the police court and the door leading cut into jackson street from the captains office have been looked locked and braced with timbers so that neither of them could be forced without the use of IL a sledgehammer sledge hammer bammer this leaves but two entrances into the office and colls one is through the door leading out nut into the court from oft off fifteenth street and the other through the door and up the narrow steps into jackson street an assaulting party would have to come by one of these two entrances and when they attempt this policemen would be on hand to receive them the police are armed with their clubs and short handles such as are used in axes and every one of them has a revolver there are only fifteen patrolmen doing duty in the streets jot the city the rest of the regular day force and some from the dogwatch dog watch being used to protect the headquarters and the city hall the police put in their time at headquarters in sleeping and talking over the situation captain coslyn said he did not expect any trouble but that it was deemed advisable to keep a force about the headquarters as a protection in case an effort was made to take possession the men will be kept on guard until the commission muddle la is settled the statement has baa been made that a quantity of arms and ammunition has been stored in the city hall as well as an the police headquarters to be used by the men this Is denied by the officers they say the regulation revolvers carried would be sufficient in case firearms were needed the force of specials has been dismissed and it is understood the men will not be re employed unless the situation becomes becom eF maro ra threatening the police report that there hits has been no disturbance of any kind find and that there Is no more reason to eject expect an attacking party now than there was a few weeks ago As a matter of tact fact Hop ewella ewells decision declares that the old commission should hold office until ousted by the supreme court |
