colleges 9 es passed august 30 1890 1 I tran transmit sint to you the following report for year ending june 10 1894 the business revulsion lias has mater itally affected the attendance during the past year students of this college lege are drawn from rural communities tie s and tile the people of those communities had not the ready money to send their sons and daughters abroad for education the attendance for the year has been during the past 3 car we occupied buildings just completed at the time the report was made for 1893 the laundry and culinary rooms of the domestic arts department the extensive rooms of the dairy department the shops for higher mechanism the forge shops wood shops drawing rooms and laboratories of the new building have been found excellently adapted to their work the college graduated its first class this year which was the fourth year of its existence the number dumber of graduates from all departments being 15 the size of the class bids fair to increase yearly the commencement men cement occasion was after the order of the old established colleges of the country and was a very successful and pleasurable occasion among the noteworthy changes of the year is the extension of the commercial course to four years the same theory upon which the other departments were founded has been applied to the commercial course namely the joint education of the head and the band or rather the union of technical with general information so far as we are aware this is the first four years commercial course that liss been organized in the country it is believed that the merchant by virtue of his associations ciati ons ous and the iD influence fluence that he may and should exert should have as extended an education as other professional men or or at least should be possessed of a good general eral education adequate for strong citizenship the corps of teachers was increased and reached 21 the appropriation for the college for tile the coming year is less than for former years inc due partly to the fact that the equipment is now a very good one and partly to the depression in the business interests of tile territory the sum given however will be made adequate to continue the growth of the institution there have baye been issued from the experiment station ten bulletins or on the following subjects bulletin no 24 on the subject of irrigation this gives tile the results of experiments on oil the influence of varying amounts of water on oil crop growth on percolation and on oil soil fertility bulletin no 25 treats on oil fruits and forest shade and ornamental trees bulletin 26 reports tile the results of trials on sub irrigation and on tile waters of irrigation bulletin 27 contains a report of the results of a trial on the time of irrigating the test being for early ate and usual irrigation the same bulletin also considers the method irrigation Bulle iiii 28 reports au an experiment expel intent on the value of f grass in the production of pork and the relation of exercise to the economy of food and growth of pig pier 0 bulletin 29 treats on oil the hie influence of varying amounts of water on so soil fertility on oil crops and on percolation of water the same bulletin reports it test on oil the relative nutritive value of lucerne wild hay and timothy bulletin 30 n gives tile the re results of f feeding ceiling a narrow versus a wide nutritive ration to horses bulletin 31 reports a feeding trial on the influence of tile hie time of harvesting on file nutritive effect of lucerne and also gives the amount rif of lucerne grown when cut twice and three limes dinies it also includes a report on the llie results of mulching on oil crop growth bulletin 32 gives ives tile the weights eights of roots of farin crops at each inch of depth for 12 incites inches it also gives the number of plants per acre all and per square foot for several of our farm crops bulletin 33 reports tile the growth in weight of steers when grazed upon nine varieties of clover and a tenth trial on grazing steers on mixed grasses the annual report of the station for 1893 contains pages it reports results of trials tl upon it on a wide range of subjects and gives the average results of experiments upon many subjects for a period of four years it is impossible to abbreviate this report within reasonable space 1 and a few only of the subjects treated will be mentioned depths of plowing for grass and grain amount of seed to sow amount of tillage required grazed against rion non grazed fields plowed against unplowed land tilled report tile the college as a whole is in a vigorous arid and healthy condition it has a strong faCt faculty lity of tried and successful teachers its equipment is adequate for vigorous growth and the plant unequaled by that of any other oilier national college in the arid and region save that possessed by california its popularity with the masses is manifested by the presence of students from ten surrounding states and territories ri it is hoped chatin the future as in the past it will be held in all its relations strictly to the purpose for which it was founded respectfully submitted JW
