Show INTERST AlE COMMERCE Abstract of the Fifth Statistical Report Just Submitted r Washington Oct 5Following is an abstract of the fifth statistical report re-port of the interstate commerce commission com-mission just submitted Total railway mileage of the country coun-try June 30 1892 171563 miles increase I in-crease during the year 3160 miles being the smallest reported for a number of years The total number of railway corporations shows a net increase of 37 during the year nine roads were abandoned 19 merged Into larger corporations 17 reorgan ized and sixteen consolidated The total number of locomotives is 33136 total number of cars 1215092 a decided de-cided increase in the density of rolling roll-ing stock Number of passengers carried per passenger locomotive63 399 number of freight cars per million mil-lion tons of freight 1627 i decrease 39 Total number of employeesS21 I 415 increase of 37130 Capitalization of the 162397 miles covered by the Report 10226748134 4633108763 of this was represented by stocks and 0053038050 by funded debts Mortgage Mort-gage bonds amounted to 4302570933 as compared with 4081621675 for the previous year The above figures fig-ures show an increase in capitalization capitaliza-tion during the year 1892 of 397273 119 Total number of passengers carried by the railways during the year 560958 average journey per passenger 2382 miles and the average number of passengers per train for each mile run 42 Freight train mileage 485402369 and average number of tons per train for each mile run 181 The gross earnings from the operations during the yeai were 1171407343 operating expenses 780997996 net earnings 390409347 Income of railways from investments 141960752 making a net income from the operation of 532370129 The fixed charges during dur-ing the year amounted to 416404 938 leaving a net income available for dividends of 115965191 Of this amount 97614745 was paid in dividends div-idends and 4314390 in other payments pay-ments leaving a surplus over the operations during the year of 14 036056 The number of railway employees killed during the year were 2554 being be-ing less than the previous year the number of employees injured in excess ex-cess of the previous year being 28 267 The number of pasengers killed was largely in excess of the previous year being 376 in 1892 as against 293 in 1891 while the number of passengers injured was 3227 in 1892 against 2972 in 1891 The assignment assign-ment of casualties shows one employee em-ployee to have been killed for every 222 employees and one employee to have been injured for each twenty nine men in the employ of the railways rail-ways A similar comparison shows that one passenger was killed for each 1497910 passengers carried u or for each 35542282 passenger miles and one passenger injured for each 173833 passengers carried or each 4 140966 passenger miles The largest number of casualties to employes resulted re-sulted from coupling and uncoupling cars the largest number to passengers passen-gers from collisions and derailments It is recommended that corporations corpora-tions so far as they are engaged in interstate traffic be required to I make reports to the interstate commerce com-merce commission |
