Show ALLEGED INHUMAN DANCES Another Cloud Cast Over the Worlds Fair People V Washington Oct 6In his report Co the commissioner of Indian affairs af-fairs Professor Rutnam in charge of V the ethnological V exhibit of the Worlds fair denounces as falsehoods the charges made by Miss Sickles chairman of the Universal Peace union un-ion that brutal and cruel exhibitions exhibi-tions of the Indian sun dance were tons given at the fair The accusations gven characterized as misrepresenta ton There has been no representa ton of the Indian sun dance and there has not been a single Indian belonging be-longing to the United States who has taken part in any exhibition except the Navajos who have been quietly quiet-ly sitting in a hut weaving and making mak-ing silver work The Indians from V Vancouver is I land who are entirely outside the I jurisdiction of the United States have given exhibitions performing ceremonial I cere-monial V songs and dances One ceremony I cere-mony consists of jugglery when the Indians pretend to beat themselves with clubsand appear to become covered cov-ered with blood These clubs have little tubes made of kelp led with red paint This paint is forced out when the tubes 1 are pressed against the body and this gives the appearance of blood Even I this exhibition which is pure jugglery and of the Hindoos and others is in itself of considerable scientific importance and interest as illustrating a custom which has been in existence with these people from time immemorial I was only performed once and then by the wish of the Indian themselves 5ithout any previous knowledge and they were directed not to give gve the exhibition again I |
