Show The California Senatorsliip The election of a United States senator is now the great subject of public interest in California and like other contests for that exalted place It is of national con i cern in view of the struggle between the two great parties for control of the upper house of Congress The California legislature stands fifty nine Democrats fiftythree Republicans and eight Populists The only obstacle to the election of a Democratic senator is the vote of those eight Populists who it will be seen form the balance of power It is understood that they will ballot solidly at first for a Populist candidate When they find it impossible to elect him they may go over in a body to the Democrats or they may unite with tha Republicans or they may divide If two I of them side with the Democrats on a joint ballot the victory the latter will be I assured providing they can unite on one candidate The Republicans will need the whole eight votes of the Populists to give them the day The most popular Democratic candidate is STEPHEN M WHITE of Los Angeles He is a fine orator a man of brains and an opponent of the millionaire idea that is that it takes a man of large capital to fill the position of United States Senator I He has never bowed before the money power He was a candidate for this office in 1S90 but withdrew for fear that he would injure his party in the state His sacrifice was duly appreciated and he is regarded as in every way fit for the position posi-tion I His chief opponent in the Democratic party was W W FOOTE of Alameda who was in charge of the California delegation to the Chicago convention and was then a strong HILL man Ho is very capable and J > also a good public speascr and stands well with a large number of his party Mr FOOTE imitating the course of Mr WHITE in 1890 has withdrawn from the candidacy that the Democratic cause may not be imperilled The probabilities are in favor of Mr WHITE but it is possible that there maybe may-be a tie when it comes to a final ballot in which case the right to appoint will devolve de-volve upon the Governor who is a Republican Repub-lican and will of course select one of his own party Among the prominent aspirants for the place on that side are the I present Senator C N FENTON M M ESTES and M H DE YOUNG |
