Show FURTHER explanation author of the article on hay wetting makes further explanations and more clearly defines his position in view ol of some little criticism that has been bestowed on my article in in the CLIPPER of Sop september I 1 wish tomake to make some further explanations and to more clearly define my position I 1 fully realize that yours is not a religious missionary paper or an advocate of either political party as your readers are members of different parties and different churches but I 1 take it for granted that all of them are morally inclined and that they are interested in the physical and moral development of all mankind no infidel even desires to hear his children blaspheme and ne lie prefers that they should grow up to be good moral and honest members of society thou not steal therefore is applicable to every Well intelligent igent being if a public preacher or newspaper writer knows of evil practices being indulged in and he hacku courage to oppose said evil he in doing so simply proves protes that lie he has mistook his calling and the eyll evil effects will continue to grow until some more loore courageous person takes his place that courage is needed and that discouragements discourage ments are abundant is plainly evidenced by the reception of the article alluded to first I 1 will ivill give all who criticise criticism critic ise it credit for being honest in their opinions and of course hope that the same charitable fe feeling fedelino elino 0 will be extern extended ded to the writer by those who apparently would not object to another one or more generations of our young men being permitted to groff gro ff up under the influence of what I 1 should think every person could practices that are dangerous in the extreme grover the good or grover the bad owing to the political creed of the one pausing judgment used some forcible words in the sentence A condition not a theory confronts us and when I 1 call attention to a condition that has to my knowledge existed almost unchallenged for over one fifth of a century and when I 1 can furnish proof that every sentence of my article is true and only very lightly touched upon although some may think I 1 went to the extreme also when I 1 can furnish proof that many of our young men have lied in selling hay bay because they considered that they were compelled to or miss selling gelling the loads they were sent gent to market arket m with and also furnish proof that leading religious men have bove taught boys to lie and cheat by precept and example in the manner described in that article aheu there is such positive proof that ull all of this is being or has been carried on the condition conditi ont or disease should be dealt with in a serious and thoughtful manner I 1 think chaft some are almost willing to admit t that hat bay should not be wet except on order v but they object J act to the man manner ner in which the matter was boroug lit ht to the attention of the public to re rep p ly IV that at least some of our preachers prea chert are or have recently been ind cr 5 in these practices habits customs or whatever they may be called by bj some it is already known that I 1 cal I 1 them crimes and I 1 do not think it a disgrace to discuss so very ic a question in our county newspaper I 1 had find that there are enough leading members of the county who say that these evils should be stopped and who sanction my humble effort to far overbalance the few objectors those who have been doing these things perhaps in some manner justify themselves and those who think they have been wrong in so doing are of course honest in their opinions it is as true that wise i so men differ as that 16 doctors disagree and I 1 hope that no feelings will be seriously hurt in the present controversy that portion of the dialogue wherein the father tells the hoy boy le lc 1 is I apt to be called a fault finder I 1 intended to mean all that it says I 1 think as little of the chronic grumbler or fault finder its as any one need to officers of any kind of an ail organization are not perfect and consequently are liable to make mistakes and under such circumstances the mantle of charity should be ever ready to cover them but if cases exist where intelligent men allow their selfish propensities to lead them into breaking the most simple and common of our laws a and nd if such parties know that their sins are I 1 might say winked at and thus in 1 a measure licensed also if they are encouraged in the thought that no one dares to complain on them in such cases I 1 believe a great deal of harm can be done to men and to boys who see and are not slow to follow uch such mens bad examples some speakers ap eakers say that it is not our duty to criticise criticism critic ise or to find fault with others and refer to sweeping our own door yards and to the unwise plan of a glass house occupants throwing rocks etc etc and in almost the next breath they will say that no man is perfect thus admitting that weak mortals or men whose dwellings contain at least a little glass will have to protest against wickedness if it is preached against at all I 1 cannot be convinced that it is right for our small boys to be placed in the position I 1 have called attention to their being placed or that it is wrong for a newspaper writer to protest against the continuance of the evil etil I 1 wish it distinctly understood that the one to three or four dollars that many of our sellers THINK THEY MAKE from the buyers is not what I 1 am protesting about it is the incomputable loss of honor and honesty in the youthful sellers I 1 wish to emphasize think they make quoted from my last article as aa it can easily be proven that during the past few years a a great number of hay bay and water sellers have lost hund hundreds redi of dollars by the buyar ers applying the principle of dog eat cat dog and to use the language of many or all such sellers they say they have cheated us out of part of our pay the subject of criticizing criticising critic ising was dwelt on at some length by some of ther the late conference speakers and some who do not enjoy my late article refer me to the same please allow me to quote fr from orn the published synopsis of one of said sermons many things had been done by the authorities that at the time were not fully understood by the people but were afterwards ds made clear in the light of subsequent events I 1 emphatically say that no subsequent events will ever prove v wrong the great commandment thou t not steal or prove that with water and cheating in weights it is right to sell 1500 or 2000 lbs of hay bay for or 2000 or 2500 no matter how much the cry of wolf wolf in the shape of fault finder critic etc is ap piled to those who object to such things T 13 C farmington FAK oct 1891 |
