Show WETTING HAY and morals of our young people discussed pretty loud by a correspondent the thorns I 1 reap are those I 1 planted they wound me and I 1 bleed I 1 might have iown known what fruit would grow from such a seed seven a in jan 2nd and of any year you care to name and in any town in davis and perhaps any other county where hay bay is ia sold it if a heavy rain occur about seven days each week innocent 14 year old boy starting starling to market father all the hay buyers are retting getting to be suspicious even with your reputation for honesty your old hay buying friend mr as he passed by my load on the market day before yesterday stuck his arm in the load pulled out a lock and either did wring or pretended to wring water out of it if a buyer asks me if the hay is wet shall I 1 tell the truth and miss selling c my load and perhaps be arrested or hall I 1 tell a straight lie as other good mens boys are practically told to do father a litte excited dont you tell them the hay is wet boy well will I 1 have to lie father go on and sell the hay bay there is only about lbs ibs of water in the load and neighbor bethay has his hired man and boys put on about five to six hundred pounds nine p in m father well how did my conscientious hay bay boy get along on the market today boy oh all right one man asked if my hay bay was wet and I 1 said no but the word seemed so big that I 1 could hardly get it out of my mouth he appeared to be suspicious and young 0 lethay actually sold his load to him I 1 saw this would not dot do so when the next man asked aske 1 me I 1 put on a bold front and made as convincing a no as young bethay did a short time aime before I 1 was quite surprised to think I 1 could so easily learn to tell lies hired man here is the money for the load I 1 sold today your boys carry as much water for it as you told them too so I 1 sold my weight with the load father well hays bays I 1 am pleased that you are such good salesmen but a little sorry you ila have ve to tell a few lies in making sales still stil I 1 we can justify ourselves in doing a little of what others folks do a good deal some people think a man can be right good spiritually while carrying on a big temporal business but I 1 always find that if a man works on a threshing machine he gets dusty honesty may in most cases be the best policy but you will find that it is always easier for many of us preachers to preach it on sundays than to practice it on week days we must have money and the more honest we can be in getting it the better but we must have money the past seasons crop thanks to providence was uncommonly heavy and we were so crowded with work that some of the hay buy was ba badly adly damaged by the sap being evaporated instead of being cured in the hay bay I 1 dont want to stand all this loss so we will just divide it a little with the hay bay buyers boy father wont adoll a dollar arthus thus taken from a hay bay purchaser do him as much hurt financially as it will do 3 you good besides hurting our consciences so that we will soon promote ourselves in the art of stealing and how bow about the bible atory of the lord causing the israelites to stone a man to death because he gathered sticks upon the sabbath lay day Is the lord as particular now about such small crimes at as he was in olden times dont the bible speak of the windows of heaven being opened to people who do right so there shall not be room enough to receive it father boy I 1 am glad you have given me a chance to talk tak now look here it is a good thing to be religious but here is a large family to support the lord helps those who help themselves and sunday is the time for preaching keep your mind more on your work boy and it is now time you were in bed as you must get an all early start in the morning with two more big or heavy loads we loaded today boy father one of our utah raised infidel young men told me a few days ago that one of you preachers tried to convert him during a long conversation and a few days after preach preaching ilIg to the infidel the latter passed by the preachers premises and saw him and his bis boys carrying water and wetting hay bay they were loading for market and that he hollowed to him to put on one more bucket of water and then go into prayers does not this and the fact that some of our cities have passed laws prescribing a punishment to hay welters aul and 91 also so the fact that some of our half mormon and half infidel boys who occasionally work for you preachers boldly tell you they dont believe such work is honest i all this enough to convince you that the few dollars you think YO you u make in wetting hay are dear dollars compared to the harm barm it does to the morals of the boys boy father are finding fault with your superiors you will be branded a fault finder boy well the prophet joseph smith said as recorded on page of the mil star of feb 1853 and so long as unrighteous acts are suffered in the church it cannot be sanctified neither can zion be redeemed now if a member of the church kicks rt at evils that are a great damage by way of retarding the progress of the church why should he be called a fault finder father boy boy you are getting bad you are much worse than I 1 thought you were boy why father I 1 almost believe that some of our big guns sort of license themselves to do these things thinking that those who see them commit such crimes dare not find fault for fear of being called fault finders but let me give you two more quotations the deseret news of dec 1893 contains a sermon delivered by one of our apostles on oct 7 1893 in which he states for I 1 say that a robber and a dishonest man has ha forfeited his hh blessing and his right to the priesthood of god and the news of last march 3rd ard has these words in a sermon by one of the first presidency on last january if one has stolen anything the best thing he be can do is to at once find the man from whom lie he has stolen and make it right with him also if we have done wrong confess that wrong and obtain forgiveness from our brethers bret breth heru erix and sisters then we can go to god and ask him to accept of us and blot out that transgression that it shall not be held against again bi us you see father this rather does away with the theory a good many men believe in that the lord will forgive sins ains without satisfaction firt first being given to those they have injured father boy oue one would think you was the preacher instead of myself now I 1 tell you you have got to help me make money for the family and when you get older you may be called on oil to do some preaching I 1 told you long ago you ought to be in bed larse LAPSE OF TEN YEARS father well my boy I 1 learn you are getting alono along in the world nicely since you went to yourself and are making money fast boy yes yea father your lessons on finance fi tiance rather smothered my natural moral and religious instincts and I 1 am making money not solfast as I 1 want to but as fast as I 1 can before I 1 left y your our home I 1 would for several years game you a little I 1 would of course give you the water money with the hay bay money but I 1 and the hired man or one of my brothers would when weighing our loads both get on the scales and sometimes I 1 would have another boy or other weight out of sight on ti the 1 e I loads and then call the wagon its nett weight and I 1 would keep this money myself after while I 1 got so I 1 could hook book stock and other things anything to swell my income and now my sole embi ambition tion is to become a millionaire as soon as possible father boy I 1 begin to fear that I 1 did give you more powerful financial than religious lessons but I 1 was in hopes you would do as I 1 am doing that is keep the temporal and spiritual about on a par with each other however I 1 am glad to learn of your financial success some of your readers may wonder what object the writer has in discussing the above subject in this manner the explanation is that too many of your readers know that there is more truth than poetry orrealia or reality ty than fancy portrayed in the above dialogue and any attempt to correct the evils so plainly discussed should be welcomed by all truly moral and religious persons I 1 presume that there are persons who think it improves the quality and think there is no harm in putting a few buckets of water on a load of hay bay but they seldom it if ever put water on hay bay that they feed their own stock consequently it looks look S I 1 like ke the aim is to increase the quantity in weight rather than the quality of the hay hay should be cured with as IDU much ch of the sap retained in it as possible it if it is allowed to bleach out dut in th the e sun bun it cannot successfully be replaced with water I 1 believe t that hat the practice has led many of our young men or influenced luene them to commit other crimes and that if there is anything in rewards and punishments that none of our hay dealers make anything in selling water for hay bay another evil resulting solely I 1 think from the men wetting hay bay is f dampening fruit by the ladies this is done by many good women on the same principle as the men wetting hay bay that is they say they do not wet it unless the fruit is very dry I 1 can caa prove that some of our church officers say it is right to wet hay bay when it is very dry of course and some of them say it is not right when doctors disagree who shall decide I 1 think we should have the question ruled on and decided by high authority we calculate we are living in the alast last days spoken of in the second chapter of isaiah when many people shall come to zion to learn of our ways etc continued on page 2 wetting hay continued from page 1 there certainly is occasion and room for improvement with us ua in many or in some respects before those people coule come as our ways or something else is causing many or our boys about one halt half of them in some localities s it is reported to be either infidels or nearly such the evils mentioned herein which i jare are practiced to an alarming extent were here surely not intended by the ancient prophet to lie he included in the ways that the people of the world should come up bozion to learn the question of the decadence of morals etc in so many of the young and the growth of infidelity is certainly of great importance it has been asserted in public that one great cause was a system of false training in our sunday schools and young peoples and primary associations but only a very few will support this theory as but few if any immoral or badly behaved young people attend such gatherings these associations and sunday schools are calculated to improve all who attend and it is safe to say that all who attend are improved thereby the great fault is a lack of home training children should not hear bear immodest or commonly called blackguard talk at home as many do frem thoughtless parents there are many people who are noted for being what t they hey should be incessantly called until they tire of the business filthy story tellers and I 1 often think that when they belong to a religious organization of any kind that they should be specially labored with they should certainly til lilly in some manner be persuaded to cease poisoning the minds of the young I 1 remember years ago telling a man who had bad been using immodest language before his bis children that he be was causing passions to develop that should lay dormant for years two important motives prompt me to write this article the one a fact lately brought forcibly to my attention that innocent conscientious boys say any they consider themselves compelled to lie when they haul wet hay to market aud and are ask asked zed whether it is wet or not their repugnance in regard to lying and the mischief it produces I 1 is is already described and if one of tb the e numerous bay welters can produce an argument in favor of the business that is as already stated under the ban of the law that will anywhere near balance against this evil I 1 for one will be pleased to read or hear such argument the other is in regard to fruit wetting I 1 have read the opinions of napoleon p oleon lord nelson and others as to the importance of good mothers in the land and I 1 cannot help but reason as follows if the fathers give way to temptation in their eagerness anxiety or worse still greed for filthy lucre I 1 there is still hope for the young if their mothers are true to honest bonest and ennobling principles but it if the fathers act as this dialogue none too forcibly represents many of them in doing and the mothers partake of the same avaricious spirit where are the hopes of a bright fu fit ture for the rising generation la in a bleak land and desolate beyond the earth somewhere went wandering through deaths dark gate gale A soul into the air and aad still as on and on it fled fied A will waste region through behind there felt the steady tread of one that did pursue at last be paused and looked aback and then he was wai aware A hideous wretch stood in the track deformed and cowering there and who art thou he be shrieked in fright that dost my steps pursue go hide bide thy shapeless from sight nor thus pollute ray my view view 1 I 1 he be foul form answered him alway along thy path I 1 flee im thine own on actions night and dy still must I 1 follow thee MJ alj SAVAGE in womans comans tribune T B C farmington september 23 1894 |
