Show DROWNED AT SIOUX CITY A sudden alac tn in the floyd river renders render people homeless and drowns a large number A great flood disaster has haa overtaken sioux city wednesday morning a great wave ware came came down the floyd river which flows through the center of the city and which w was as already swollen bank full the first note of warning was a telegram received at 7 from hinton II Inton twelve miles up the valley to the effect that a four teen foot rise was coming intelligence was sent bent to the police station chief ila haw man was notified and sent cent at once for an engine loaded a boat and started up the illinois contral central track trach for leeds the wave struck when but bat a short distance up anil and the boat was launched at once F from rom one house three children were taken but the mother could not be rescued and perished the party narrowly escaped being overturned by a second wave six feet in height the angry waves nearly made away with the boat from another house seven people were taken who had crawled into the attic eight minutes after the house toppled over and swept down the stream five people were taken from a tree at Sp ringdale when the warning came captain of police wickes and a posse made haste for the flat and warned as many as could be reached be bc tore fore the flood came many would not listen to words of warning saying they hid had seen high water before and stayed and were drowned others were saved with much of their belongings the missouri river Is very high and when the flood in the floyd river struck it the water bater dammed up and rushed over the ad I 1 jacent abent low grounds the stock yards and packing houses were situated at the confluence I 1 of the two rivers and they were instantly inundated and 2000 cattle drowned the scene at the chamber of commerce was 1 I pitiful one hysterical women rushed hither and thither with tearful eyes in vain strying trying to locate their missing ones others mothers with their loved ones all saved thanked a merciful god for hla his favor poor andrich und rich meton melon the common level all thankful even for life I 1 the city council appropriated for immediate relief and several thousand have been by subscription tho the ladles ladies have been doing noble work providing shoes and clothes for the children I 1 at 10 at night the relief committee bad the names of fifteen persons known to have been drowned and authentic reports of the drowning of three or tour four times that num 1 ber it Is believed that the death list will not number less lees than a hundred |
