Show DE WHITES LECTURE The Noted Educator Talks to a Large Audience What Constitutes Character Some of the Outer Signs of the Inner LIfe An Eloquent Address A fair audience composed mainly of teacher assembled at the Odd Fellows hal last evening to hear Dr Whites lecture oh < Character The speaker was introducedby Prof Andrews as one of theleading educators of the day Dr Whit said in part All life is dual It has an inner being and an outer manifestation Natureis but an effect the manifestation f that Infinite One Who isUs source and life This dual being in preeminently au attribute tribute 01 mat In the mortal life these two existences are distinguished in part by the terms tcliaracter and conduct Character is the inner Tjrinciplo of the moral lifeconduct is that principle in its outer visible flow character is the bun tain conduct f outflowing stream Character not only the rnner principle of tllpn alle IUtlt 1S alSO us resuic its creation Every act of the soul leaves as its enduring result an increased power to act and a tendency to act again in like manner Power and tejidecy are the results sults of all soul action The powers and tendencies resulting from moral action constitute moral character Character is the total rcsultaht of mans desires and intentions The human soul is not a mere canvas can-vas on which lie throws her images of thought and desire only t6 van ish again to give place to succeeding suc-ceeding shadows Every thought every purpose arising in the human soul leaved its impress there and becomes a part of it The thought am now linking the feeling I am noW cherishing cherish-ing will live forever aa inseparable part ot my existence Tile roots of what we are today runback under the soil of all our past lite slhd touch every past emotion emo-tion and experience Within us are the fruits of all our past life There is in every human soul an unerring membry out of which nothing ever absolutely fades My next point Is that mans real influence flows from his inner life that indwelling character is the source of mans power and success Back of all a man says or does is the man himself Tt is the inner man that is so mighty in influence BO irresistible in action The very presefaco of a truly good and great man exercises a mysterious influence in-fluence over usA us-A mans inner life is wrapped in no inscrutable in-scrutable secrecy Character way be veiled but it cannot be concealed I is sell luminous Every desire sel every emotion every purpose of the soul has its outer expression We wear our lives as we wear our garments and we are much better known than we think This outer expression of the inner life is the explanation explan-ation of the art oi the detccthe an art that picks out a rogue in a crowd or spots him as he alights from a railroad carat the station staton The doctor then spoke of some of the other signs of the inner life He mentioned men-tioned the temper the face the voice the laugh the manners and the language I as soul revealers citing instances in proof of eaCh Whatever maybe tho means by whieh our inner life shines out of one thing we may be assured what Is in us will come out in spite of l our shams and coverings cover-ings Genuine character tells A judge in sentencing a young man for murder Said Young l you once had a wrong desire You did not check it You let i lead you to l act You repeated that act and it became a habit That habit once formed marred your character Your character has brought you to an awful destiny May that higher power have mercy on your soul All that hs been said leads to the one conclusion that character and influence are not accidents of life They heither spring from the ground nor fall from the sky They are in the man Imputation is what ton thinks of us Character is what God knows of us Pitch not your tent on the plain of sensual indulgence All higher life is uphill Right living always 1 climb Live true to the noble and divine impulses im-pulses of your nature The grandest result of human life is manhood and the regal fact of manhood is character A noble character is at once the joy and victory oElife tollce Notes I Lillie Lacombe and Emma Davelle two French prostitutes were arrested by Officer Hemple last night for engaging in a light on Franklin avenue Three nymphs du pave were run in last night GeorgI Lang and Ed Andrews were arrested ar-rested last night for brutally assaulting one of the employees at Saltair |
