Show HE BLOCKED THE GAME A Bunco Steerer Caught by Captain Donovan The Sure Shot Boy Had a Sucker In Tow William Edwards Arrested For Stealing a Watch John Tnckinin a young man from Park Pak City arrived in town yesterday and put up at one of the hotels Life in the Park has been rather quiet of late and he thought a glimpse of the busy bustling capital would do him good I and considered it a piece of good luck when by accident on his part he fell in with a tall welldressed wellmannered and wellinformed man The two speedily speed-ily struck up an acquaintance and the Salt Laker took such an interest in his newly made friend that he volunteered to show him the sights He was doing this to the queens s taste when unfortunately for him but luckily for the Park City man Captain Donovan spied the pair going go-ing up Main street and at once recognized recog-nized in the Salt Lake man Charley Chapman an expert bunco steerer and confidence man He followed fol-lowed them to a curio store in the Tem pleton and while the sure shot boy was in the midst of an entertaining dissertation disserta-tion on some of the things displayed there the captain entered and took a hand in the game Chapman bluffed and called the officer who flashed his star and proceeded to gather in the pot The Park City man was amazed at the unexpected developmentsand went along with the captain and his prisoner When on State street just below the Keely institute the officer noticed that his prisoner was tearing up a piece of paper and asked him what he was doing do-ing None of your dd business J was the reply The captain thought it was though and grabbed Chapmans hand The latter resisted and a moment later measured his length on the sidewalk while the officer took from his hand a mutilated check for 100 and in his pocket found another drawn on the Union National for 57 payable pay-able to J M Dusenberry and signed by S G McIntosh both of whom are probably proba-bly myths The checks were evidently prepared for a flash and i Chapman had not been nabbed he would doubtless have steered the stranger against some skin game and induced him t put up his money against the checks Chapman will have a hearing in the police po-lice court today I |
