Show IT WONT TELL TIlE TRUTH Wo knew of course the Tribune would not tell the truth It is not in the nature of the beast In the list of responses to Governor Gov-ernor WESTS circular letter published in THE HERALD there were only three absolutely abso-lutely refusing to cooperate with the Democratic party One was from a constitutional consti-tutional blackguard one from a DOOLI Democrat and the third from a loudmouthed loud-mouthed itmoramus All the others were in part or wholly in accord with the Democratic policy favoring a nonpolitical school board or the new political movement move-ment in toto Five out of eight is a majority ma-jority satisfactory enough for THE HERALD when coming from a number of Democrats that Boss POWERS had set aside as uncompromising uncom-promising Liberals to serve on the committee com-mittee of one hundred The Tribune says we find three men out of fifty have declined to serve Indeed In-deed I When did the balance of the fifty accept ac-cept the assignment made of them by the bosses Will the organ of the bosses publish pub-lish their letters of acceptance or give the names of those who were present at the se crct meeting of one hundred Tell the truth The Tribune says it will not name the four Liberal boodlers in the city council until THE HERALD shall revise a bit of ancient an-cient history Well a poor excuse is perhaps per-haps better than none at alL In the meantime mean-time let it be kept on record that the organ oftho bosses claims to know four Liberal members of the city council who are robbing rob-bing the people but because they are of its own party the organ would rather condone their boodling than give them away That is Liberalism as the bosses Interpret it In one thing though we accept the explanation ex-planation the Tribune It says when it spoke of killing a fewOemocrmt8 it did not jT S I mean by assassination We presume it meant by inflaming the passions and pro udlces of men to an uncontrolable pitch and by provoking controversies that should lead to bloodshed When persuasion and argument do not suffice an appeal to killing kill-ing is intended That is probably what the Tribune understands by doing it ever time in a fair fight Speaking in this connection of bosses let us take the Tribune gently by the ear and whisper something in it The times have changed Bullragging does no longer count The Democrats and Republicans who have left the Liberal party because cf their conviction con-viction that the Liberal party had fulfilled its mission are scarcely the men to WInce before the lash of POWERS and his cossacks They have the courage of their opinion and that kind of men do not scare easily If the Tribune will bear this secret in mind it will save itself a great deal of pain and disappointment |
