| Show BENCH AND AIn A-In writing of the bench and bar of Utah there are few who deserve amore a-more conspicuous place and prominent mention than Attorney William H Dickson An able lawyer a persuasive persua-sive pleader and a reliable counselor he is distinguished for the scrupulous fidelity with which he attends to the Interests of his large clientele for the erudition he displays in the management manage-ment of a case and as a trial lawyer lawer he has few equals anywhere He has handled a great many important cases in which heavy interests were involved in-volved Mr Dickson is a native of Canada born at St Johns New Brunswick in I the year 1847 He received his school ing in his native city which affords excellent opportunities for acquiring a firstclass education He adopted the law as his profession and entered the office of George Otty where he studied and becoming associated with Mr Otty he practiced law with marked success until 1873 when he came to the United States and settled in Virginia Vir-ginia City Nev where he entered Into business and remained for nine years making for himself a reputation reputa-tion as a trial and consulting counsel coun-sel second to none In that state > Nevada Ne-vada was not large or progressive enough to hold Mr Dickson and in 1882 he left that state and came to Salt Lake where he has since resided re-sided He ha never been a seeker of public office but preferred sticking close to his profession However In 1S84 he wa appointed United States district attorney by President Arthur an office which he ably filled until 1887 when he was called upon to resign by the Democratic administration under President Cleveland for political reasons rea-sons only he being a staunch Republican Repub-lican In 1882 when he first came to this city Mr Dickson formed a partnership partner-ship with his old associate Attorney C S Varian under the firm name of Dickson Varian which lasted until 18S6 when it was dissolved and both i parties set out each on his own account i ac-count In 1890 Mr Dickson entered into partnership with Marshal N Stone which lasted for about 3 year when owing to illl health Mr Stone retired and went to live in California since which time Mr Dickson has gone on alone with great success During the term when Mr Dickson was United States attorney he figured very prominently as prosecutor in the polygamy cases great numbers of which came up at that time and one of the greatest compliments which could have been paid to his ability is the fact that on his retirement from the office of United States attorney he was immediately retained by the MOrmon MOr-mon church against which his efforts had during his official life been mainly directed and he is now one of the leading counsel for the church in the escheat whichhave occupied the cases attention is the courts ef CUthld i I few years He was formerly retained In a great I many criminal cases and during his career has been engaged in twentysix murder cases either a prosecutor or defender Latterly he is devoting his attention more to civil than to criminal crimin-al business for many reasons preferring pre-ferring the latter He occupies an elegant ele-gant suite of offices in the Progress building and has an extensive law library li-brary Personally Mr Dickson is very popular popu-lar with the bar and also has a host of friends outside of the legal profession profes-sion In Masonic circles he figures prominently and has attained distinction dis-tinction In the craft He is genial wholesouled and a1 thorough gentleman gentle-man both at thebar and in the social walks of life CHANCELLOR KENT JR J i |
