| Show f P Jt DAMEL H WELLS Death of a Eespected and Well known Citizen The Sad Event Occurred at 1 Oclock Xester day of PlenoPnemnonla Superin duced by La Grippe With the sounding of 1 oclock yesterday yester-day afternoon there passed away from earth a man with the soul of a giant and tho heart of a Titan Daniel H Wells one of the foremost characters in Mormon history was widely and lovingly known throughout Utah and the west as one of the most prominent among the leaders of the church He died yesterday after a short illness in the Eighteenth ward of this city He had been attacked by the prevailing grippe but within the past few days the disease turned into a painful form of pleuropneumonia He was attended constantly by Drs Harrison son and Young but though every means known to human skill was applied the great age at which he had arrived 70 years rendered the issue doubtful from the first and he passed away quietly in the presence of most of the members of his family The news will come as a great shock to the public few of whom know that Squire Wells as he was familiarly called was ailing Since his return from England a few yearc back he has aged con eiderably but ho was frequently soon about the streets on the occasion of his visits from Manti where he had charge of the templeand no news of his illness had been published His son Junius F Wells has been telegraphed for to New York and will arrive this morning another son Briant Wells is a cadet at West Point butlit is not probable that he can arrive before the obsequies ob-sequies When and where the funeral will take place had not been determined lat evening Daniel Hamner Wells was born at Trenton Tren-ton Onieda counts New York October 27 1814 Early I life he moved to Illinois lived at Commerce afterwards and led aferwals known as Nauvoo for some time I was there he became intimate with the prophet Joseph Smith and a strong friendship sprang up between the two men which lasted until the doath of the then leader of the Mormon church I was at about the time of the death of the prophet that Squire Wells cast his lot with the church of his choice and was a prominent figure in the history of those persecuted people from that hour until his death While not one of the original pioneers he was one of the earliest settlers in this city reaching Salt Lake in 1S48 Since that date his history has been identical with that of the city he loved so well and which he served so faithfully in various capaci ties For many years he was second I counselor to tho late President Brigham Young and when the latter died he was made a counselor to the twelve apostles Since the opening of the Manti temple he has had charge of it Counselor Daniel H Wells served as a member of the Utah legislature for several sessions and was mayor of Salt Lake for several terms succeeding the Hon A O Smoot and being succeeded by the late Hon William Jennings In private and public life he won the respect re-spect confidence and love of all with whom he had dealings Though firm when occasion occa-sion demanded it he was kind and effec tionate to a degree that was little less than remarkable Throughout the length and breadth of Utah hearts will ache and tears will fall when the news of the death of the great and good man reaches tbe thousands of his acquaintances and friends and the removal re-moval of the deceased takes away one of the great and noble characters not only of I Utah but of the Great West |
