Show nIR HAFERS Athfl He Answers the Charges Made 1 I by W D Druce i AND DEFENDS BILLY RYAN How He Worked Things in a Dual Capacity t After Puttinc in Kislit Hours for the City He Turned Miner salaries of DC partnjcnt KiHplirjets Paid Yesterday Yes-terday In Warraiith and Cash The affidavit of W D Druce regarding the employmeqt of city workmen at the Mogul mine in City creek cauyon owned by Superintendent of Water Works Ryan and others created something ot a sensation sensa-tion and the statements made by Druce certainly placed Mr Kyan and his associates asso-ciates in a very bad light Yesterday they secured the following counter affidavit affi-davit which explains itself SALT LAKE cm Aug 3 1833 I J A Shafer a resident of Snit LJKO city and the territory of tjtuh depose and say tbat 1 am anemployee of the Salt LuUe city waterWorks water-Works department and that my huainesa has been to run tanneSt prospect for water clear out springs and remove decayed matter from the water sources supplying bait Lake city with water through the pipes In view of the fact that one W D Dime has mud a statement state-ment to the public under oah that certain dishonest labor has been performed by me and him therefor to place before the public the circumstances under which W D Druce has been influenced to mune his sensational affidavit affi-davit tc < r On the IGth of June ISSii under Instruction I front W H Ran superintendent of the Salt lillko Ritr wntfirwnrlis T was moved with a camping i outflt to a point in City Creek canyon about eight miles from Sal Lake city or three quarters of a mile from the fonts of said creek where snowslldes had washed the dead stumps and decayed matter from the mountains tl put the road In a passable codi fon i and to remove all foreign and decayed matter irom the creek With these Instructions on the 16th of June 1503 I employed em-ployed one V D Druce to assist me In the erformance of some ivork My instructions rom w H Ryan were tQ work I el ht hours each day for said Salt Lake city and to be paid for the sane at 5325 per day and that the iflfd II Deuce was to receive 250 per day for his services ser-vices Out of each day and every twentylour hours worked eight hours and no more After Af-ter this work was done for said city I made an arrangement on my own account with W D Druce to do a little prospect work ou the Mogul mining claim In the Hot Springs district for which ho received his board This claim was located and owned by W H Ryan J A Shafer J L Hokc and P J Moran and timber used and supplies of all character were bought and paid for by privato funds for which I have receipted bills The condition of the mine la such that only about two to two and half hours work could be done each day as the smoke from blasting would require tho rest of the day to clear out The sensational accusations W D Deuce aro without semblance of foundation and In every particular incorrect JAMES A SHATEB Subscribed and sworn to before me this 3rd day of August 1893 LILBUBN P PALMER Notary Public The public can now judge of the merits of the case both sides of the story having been told It maybe said in passing that if the charges made by Mr Druce areuntrue no sufficient motive for making mak-ing them has been shown while it was to ba expected that the other parties would do what they could to clear themselves |
