Sandwich been so full of enthusiastic en-thusiastic people a today when sno W tended a cordial welcome to exPresident Grover Cleveland who haa chosen Cape Cot as his place of residence during the summer months Tho occasion was not conSed to the local bounds of Sandwich and Bourne but t all al Cape Cod whose residents irrespective or politics and summer visitors unite in the welcome The heavy fall of rain yesterday yester-day has been followed by pleasant weather today Tho usual quiet was disturbed and1 the streets transformed Into busy thor ouehfares strangers by hundreds having arrived last night and this morning The special train having on board Governor Russell and staff and other invited guests stopped at Buzzards bay where exPresi dent Cleveland escorted by Governor T McLaughlin was in waiting accompanied by Joseph Jefferson General Whittier and other distinguished gentlemen Cleveland was given a hearty reception on the train Upon the arrival here a procession was formed headertnby a band and Cleveland escorted to a large tent where a reception was held In welcoming exPres ident Cleveland on behalf of the citizens of Cape Cod Governor Russell warmly eulogized Clevelands administration eulogzed ministration and closed with the assurance that Massachusetts believes in a sound currency and will not lend her aid to any movement however honest its purposes which wouldiresult in Jdebaslnff the currency cur-rency unsettling credit or impairment of l values and stated the people view with confidence Clevelands expression of opinIon opin-ion and praised the courage that led him I fearlessly and emphatically to state his convictions on such a important public 1 question ExPresident Cleveland replying to Our Neighbor the exPresident returned I thanks Tor the neighborly attentions of the te inhabitants of Cape Cod and speaking of the presidency said the honor having been relinquished it was incumbent ho should J again return to the people to assume the ordinary duties of citizenship subject to the same rules and behavior which apply to his fellow countrymen and the return should be accorded the saire fair and decent treatment Many people however treatent appear 1 ap-pear to believe once out of office we ara constantly engaged in plotting for our own I benefit this tends not only to destroy the party to which we belong but to subvert popular liberty and utterly uproot free American institutions Others are of the opinion that we should be utilized a orators ora-tors at country fairs and still others thai I we interfere in every political contest He declared his confidence however in the good sense of the vast majority of the plain American people and hoped to be I < good neighbor notwithstanding a large majority ma-jority of his neighbors were in 0 bad state of delusion politically and hoped that all would join in guiding political action to 1 higher level than a mere struggle for partisan par-tisan success i tsan Clevelands remarks were frequently applauded j ap-plauded and a he closed there was another an-other outburst Goternor Russell was then introduced Cleveland and Governor Russell walked arm in arm to the an hour recess was taken before dinner t The assembly adjourned to the casino i whore a banquet was served When Cleveland Cleve-land entered and took his seat on the stage he was given a great ovation ladies waving wav-ing their handkerchiefs and gentlemen cheering Three cheers were given for the net President and three for the next governor gov-ernor The speakers and invited guests occupied seats on the platform After the banquet Henry C Thatcher of Yarmouth presided and made I brief address of welcome wel-come and introduced Cleveland as the guest of the occasion As Cleveland rose to address the assembly he was greeted with long continued applause and cheers President Choate of the Old Colony railroad raised great applause by saying in his speech that the silver letter of ex President Cleveland Is tho most important service to the business community that could possibly have been rendered Mayor Matthews of Boston Charles Fracis Adams and others spoke President Collision of the Young Mens Democratic club of Massachusetts emphasized em-phasized the nonpartisan character of tho occasion by saying he would be proud to join in a tribute to any Republican who had done faithful service He then called for throe cheers for President Harrison which were heartily given Mr Cleveland I rising and waving his handkerchief The exercises closed at 530 and Cleveland and tho governor were
