Show The Fair ana Sunday Closing CHICAGO Sept 3The national Columbian Colum-bian commission reassembled at 10 oclock this morning A resolution was passed inviting in-viting the board of lady managers to ba present and sit with the national commission com-mission during the presentation of the memorial of the American Sabbath union for closing the exposition Sundays The nomination of L W Robinson engineer en-gineer corps United States navy to bo chief of the department of machinery was unanimously confirmed After some other unimportant business a recess was taken pending tho arrival of the delegation from the American Sabbath union and the lady managers The members of the Sabbath union and board of lady managers arrived shortly before be-fore 1130 Colonel Shepard as president presi-dent of the American Sabbath union presented the memorial of the union praying pray-ing for the closing of the fair on Sunday He also as president of the Sabbath observance ob-servance committee of the general assembly of the Presbyterian church presented the petition of that body to the same end I i Several members of the union then made 1 speeches in favor of Sunday closing among I them being Rev Sylvester Scoville president i presi-dent of Wooster college Wooster Ohio I General O O Howard Rev T B Fern ley of Philadelphia and Colonel Alexander S Maitland of Brooklyn Hon Thomas F Coffin of Iowa repr seating the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen Train-men presented the subject on behalf of that organization and wage earners ID general Rev Francis Patton president Princeton Prince-ton university then presented the question tion from the Biblical point of view i Mrs R L Carse presented a petltloa from 10000 members of the Womans Chris tain Temperance union The meeting thea took a recess On reassembling it was announced that action on the Sunday closing question would be deferred until the local directors I have made their rules and submitted them to the commission for approval After a skirmish tho report of the committee com-mittee on classification was adopted It establishes practically without a siagla change the plan of classification arranged by VicePresident M H DaYoung Tfa I report of tho auditing committee also passed muster Consideration of a 3000000 loan by the government was called up ns the special order YicoPresidont DeYoung offered resolution referring the whole subject to the judiciary committee with instructions to report in favor of tho loan Commissioner TtlcKcnzie of Kentucky argued against a sudden proposal to the the country to loan the fair such a large sum and wanted it postponed until the April meeting Do Young then amended his resolution by leaving the committee to report accord dng to their own discretion An adjournment was then taken until tomorrow to-morrow and tonight the judiciary committee com-mittee met and promptly agreed upon tho report endorsing appeal of the Chicago lr directors to Congress for a loan of the sum t named the government to take as security i a lien upon tho first receipts of the exposition exposi-tion The local directory today formerly confirmed con-firmed the nomination of J M Samuels of Kentucky as chief oJ the horticultural department de-partment L W Robinson United States navy chief of the machinery depnrtment and H S Peabody of Illinois chief of the department of liberal arts They have already al-ready boon confirmed by the national boari of control ana are now duly appointed ap-pointed |
