Show r t THE STANTON MESS A 1 Covmcilman Says It Will Go toMe to-Me GranS Jury Some AflidjiTltS of Discharged Employees j What tho Committee Kcally Wants to Investigate The Weekly Reports The attitude of Fire Chief Stanton with reference to the charges made against him can hardly be called one of conscious Innocence and his position now does not strengthen him even with his friends j When the charges were first mad the i 7 chief seemed to be hungry for a lull andiair investigation but his appetite te seems to have been suddenly satisfied Ttoii the committee did not proceed with the investijr ion so Councilman Beards ley says wur because tho chief wanted a little dely In looking UP the McIlroy charges however the comraitte stumbled upon more serious matters and when they tried to have a full and fair investigation in-vestigation of them Chief Stanton objected ob-jected on the technical ground that they were not included in the original charges So the committee went back to tho council coun-cil for additional authority and two members being absent it was granted only after a stubborn fight On Friday night however this extension of authority was revoked by a vote of eight to six and the committee then undertook to place certain information informa-tion which had come to them before the ccunwil It was rejected and hence the committee felt at liberty yesterday to divulge di-vulge part of the information which Is in the shape of affidavits from employees who have been discharged AFFIDAVITS OF DISCHABGED EMPLOYEES One is from M P Hooker who states that he went to work in the fire department depart-ment on May 24 1892 and was continuously r continu-ously employed there until April 8 1693 During all that time he saye the chief was very profane and abusive to the men that on one particular occasion Stanton came into the hea quarters at an early hour in the morning struck an alarm and hnd the men and horses racing up and down the street for at least an hour It is also alleged that the chief uses the men as his servants making them clean his housekeeping house-keeping quarters carry coal to them etc that during all the timo affiant was with tho department Stanton bad a cow there which was fed from the department depart-ment bins and looked after by the firemen fire-men and that a pony belonging to the chiefs son was kept the same way He tells of a supper given by the assistant chief on March let at which several men became intoxicated and engagad in fighting fight-ing When the project for building the copper works was agitated Stanton called the men in and told them he wanted them to contribute 10 each to tho fund and discharged thoaj who relused to do so J C Madsen corroborates the facts set forth in Hookers affidavit and states some additional facts as to the alleged brutal war in which the chief treats his men E J Randolph another discharged 1 man states that in the fall of last year the I xs department turned out to a fire on the corner of West Temple and South Temple fittebta and alfiant was standing near the captain when tho chief came up and wanted to know why he didnt let the damned thing burn and give those Mormon Mor-mon s of b s a roasting Randolph Ran-dolph also states on the occasion of afire a-fire in a second hand store on Commercial street the chief ordered him to turn off the chemical and let the place burn awhile MAT GO TO THE GRAND TORY 4 It was not such matters as these the committee say that they desired to investigate inves-tigate however but the more serious charges to the effect that the chief has retained re-tained commissions on the purchase of horses boss wagons materials etc for the department Although they have been shut out they think it is only temporary tem-porary Mayor Baskin will still have something to say about the matter but even should the whitewash brigade succeed suc-ceed in staving off the cfull and fair investigation which Stanton craved it will go to the grand jury At least one member of the committee has announced his intention of carrying this investigation investiga-tion through to a finish by that means and either having the charges proved or the chief vindicated While the anxious members of the committee com-mittee declare that they have offenses of a graver character than any that have yet been charged they absolutely refuse to permit it to go to the public but intimate inti-mate that it will all be brought out through an investigation i either by the grand jury or the council |
