Show POLITICAL PALAVER A Rousing Meeting of Democrats at Springville GERMANS AND SCANDINAVIANS Great Enthusiasm for Democratic Principles Everywhere and Apathy for Republican Rvublcn iI iOn I i-On Saturday night a rousing Democratic meeting The was held at Springville band a out early discoursing patriotic strins and tae town was soon afire with the Democratic ardor A large gathering assembled at the city hal including most of the prominent citizens of the toD Mr Deal was elected chairman and in a few appropriate words introduced to the audience the speakers of the evening Judge Judd and Prof Paul of Salt Lake and A D Gash of Provo JUDGE JTDD congratulated the people that the time had come when all can take part in the discussion discus-sion of the great questions which are agitating agi-tating the nation at large The Democratic party true to its traditional policy rested its faith in the integrity of the people and was willing that the doctrines and principles princi-ples that it taught should be compared with those of other parties in order that the pceoplo might mako an intelligent choice A Republican gentleman had recently warned his party that it should be up and doing since i the Democrats were already in the field and that it is easier to matte Democrats of the people than it is to make Republicans of them You must educate the people I up to Republicanism he said In this significant statement we get at a truth I that is full of meaning I taKes compara j lively little learning on the part of any man to believe in equal rights to all and special favors to none that is Democracy But when you try t make a man believe that five men should be taxed for the support sup-port of one other man you have to educate him up t it Laughter and applause That is Republicanism The masses of the laboring people take kindly to the teachings teach-ings of Democracy The Democratic doctrine is simpler than any other and I therefore better and more likely to be trueThe The Democratic party believes in the sovereignty of the United States government govern-ment as defined and limited by the constitution consti-tution and in obedience to its laws But it does not believe that the government is in any especial danger from tho people rather that the liberties of the people are endangered by tno encroachments of the federal government beyond the limits assigned as-signed to it by the constitution The Democratic party believes in the autonomy of the several states as a necessary neces-sary guarantee of the blessings of oo self government The right of tho people to manage their own local affairs is a fundamental funda-mental principle of Democracy No interference inter-ference from federal authority into matters that have been reserved to the states by their not being granted by ltn constitution to the federal government i tolerable to the Democratic idea of local rule This party believes that the primal idea of all taxes should be revenue and that the taxation of one class for the benefit of another an-other class is altogether unjust and foreign to the purpose of taxation Tho effect of such taxation is to build up monopolies to oppress the people and corrupt the sovern ment through their wealth and power The judge then discussed the local situation situa-tion with his usual perspicuity and received many rounds of applause throughout PROF j n PAUL spoke upon the subject of taxation The last Congress he said appropriated a round billion of dollars a sum half as great as the entire sumo money in the whole United States The speaker then took up the case of the tax paid by laboring men farmers for example and the audience enjoyed the keen humor of such illustrations illustra-tions a this The farmer get up in th e morning and puts on a flannel shirt that is taxed 10 per cent This costly garment for which he paid twice what it could have been sold for at a fair profit is fastened i with buttons taxed 150 per cent sewed on with a needle taxed 2 per cent and threat taxed 74 per cent His coarse heavy trousers trous-ers bear a tax correspondingly heavy 10 per cent and are held up by suspenders taxed G5 per cent He puts on socks taxed 10 per cent shoes taxed Uo per cent and a coat taxed 95 percent vine speaker then proceeded to prove from statistics compiled by the government govern-ment that tho goods we bring into this country are simply the pay for tho goods we send out The talk of the Reuublicans that bringing goods from abroad takes money from a country is mere deception or ignorance Last year wo sent out more goods than we brought in but we sent out I more gold and silver than wo brought in i And this is always the case The farms of America produce a surplus I Onefourth on an average of all that is raised on American farms cannot be consumed con-sumed here It must be exported The pay for it consists of goods on which tho government levies a tax averaging 3 percent per-cent That is the government seizes one third of the pay for this surplus It would I to precisely the same if onethird of the crops exported were confiscated t begin with This robbery of Americans who I produce a surplus in favor of other Americans Amer-icans who desire a monopoly of certain lines of goods and dislike to compete with I their countrymen on equal terms is called protection I The audience followed closely with evi dent interest and frequent applause Mr A D Gash kept the audience in a I roar dunnir much of his speech and with i wit and logic ho punctured many a Republican Repub-lican bubble Ho demonstrated the loyalty of the Democratic north during the war and that the war was a sectional not apolitical I a-political contest He paid a glowing trio ute to the filly out of the seventy generals in the union army who were Democrats I and paid his compliments to the irridescent I Kunsan who had slandered them in neat and strong satire At the conclusion of Mr Gashs speech three rousing cheers were given with thre rou9inJ 1ven s will for the Democratic cause The meet ing was an unusually fine one The city bal was packed with an intelligent audience audi-ence ana many could not get inside the building The vigor and earnestness of the speakers and above all the specific manner in which they handled their subjects sub-jects were a striking contrast with the ague and uncertain doctrines taught at the Republican meeting a week before Next Saturday night Springvillo will organize a Democratic club |
