Show Cabinet Officers Favor GIviiiR Chi Time NEW YOUK Oct 29A special from Washington says conservative members of the cabinet favor taking no decisive action L in the Chilian matter until the new government govern-ment recently elected is established to pay little heed of the junta aud to give the I government ample opportunity to investi gate and make reparation There is little I i talk in official circles of actual trouble Captain Eoen of the navy yard in Brook I lyn has made this statement I is the I opinion at the yard that the trouble between I I I be-tween our government and Chili will not go so far as to necessitate the sending to i Valparaiso of tne cruisers Nothing of i tidal relative to the course of thn government govern-ment has been received here In case it I should become necessary to send part of I the navy to South America not more than four ships will be needed to carry on operations against Chi I There are not more than three or four warships war-ships in its navy which could offer resistance I resist-ance to our cruisers It is hardly probablo j j England Germany or any of the great i powers of Europe would interfere between i I the United States and Chill should war re j suit and i it should be considered neces l sary to send our navy to the South Pacific I j there would be no need of holding back war ships to proteot the coast in anticipa antcipa tion of trouble with European I governments ments So far as Germany is concerned tho admiral of her navy has stated he believed the treatment of the American sailors was an outrage and the United States government had a right to reparation repara-tion England however great may be its commercial and financial iutorests in Chili will never take sides against the United States in trouble arising from the recent oulrage To get the cruisers and other vessels now here in condition for a voyage would take but a few days The ships now at the Brooklyn navy yard are the Philadelphia Atlanta Vermont Concord Benin ton Miantonomah Terror Petrel and Chicago The Boston has loft wr jo South Pacific Paoif stution ancf the Yorktowii is on thc way there The Newark is at Boston and ready for sailing orders The Char leston the flagship of the Asiatic station is in China The Vesuvius is expected here from Washington today or tomorrow tomor-row and the torpedo boat Cashing is at Washington The San Francisco is on the PaciUo coast end the Baltimore is at Valparaiso Val-paraiso The heavily armored double turreted tur-reted monster Miantonomah was put in I commission Monday noon and is a fearful I antaguonist for any war ship She carries I four IGinch guns six two pounders two three pounders two machine guns and two galling guns and is ready to leave on L I notice CD The cruisers of the first class have twin I screws and can make the fastest time They are the Chicago Baltimore Philadel I phia Newark and San Francisco This tremendous naval force is in full condition 1 and could be assembled against Chili in little lit-tle over a month but would find no vessel I approaching them in power along the whole Pacific coast within that time At no time recently has our navy been in a position to place so many of its best war ships at the front in so short 0 time Said a naval officer today We should not need troops in Chili for our war vessels ves-sels with their complement marines and sailors would bo ample for the purpose of subjugating Chili should it overcome to that point which I very much doubt |
