Show RAILROAD RUMBLES The R G W Adopts the Standard System of Signals ATE OF THE PAYSON EXCURSION All the JJechanical Departments of the U P S Reduce Hours Today With Corresponding Corres-ponding Deduction of Waxes This morning the standard system of s signals goes into effect on the Rio Grande Vestern railroad orders for its adoption aving been issued by Superintendent Velby about two months ago At the same time all trainmen were ordered to be exam ned in the use of the signals before they hould use them The standard signals are used by all he principal railroads east and west The Denver and Rio Grando and Union Pacifice ailroads have been using them for sometime some-time The benefit to the railroads in using the same system is obvious as otherwise at junction points where trainmen from different points meet exchange cars and haye business in common the signals of one set is unintellgible to the otherand serious se-rious accidents are apt to occur in consequence conse-quence Hnplrt Transit The Rapid Transit city railway has at last succeeded in reaching with its tracks the two main depots the Union Pacific and Rio Grando Western Tho cars have been running into tho Union Pacific depot for a week and now the tracks have cached the Rio Grande Western depot Tho route from Main streetis along Fourth Soutn street to Fifth West street and along that street to the depot over which line the cars will be running in a short time I I Goshen I The people of Goshen are anxiously aw citing the entry of the Rio Grande Western railroad into their town so they may come out by rail to the territorial fair this fall Goshen is on the line of new road building from Springville to Eureka and it is only a matter of a short time be Jre it will have railroad connection with the capital 1 I Change of Date On the 19th there will be an excursion from Payson to Castilla Springs instead of on the 15th as was previously announced This excursion is to celebrate the opening of Payson to the outside world by rail A Lays Work This morning the men in all tho mechan ical departments of the Union Pacific system sys-tem commence work under the now rule of eight and onehalf hours for a days work Heretofore nine and one half hours constituted consti-tuted a days work except on Saturday when it was five hours Now five hours are allowed on Saturday and eight and onehalf hours all other days This re duces the number of hours for the week from fiftytwo and onehalf to fortyseven and onehalf or five hours At first sight this would seem to be for the benefit of the workingmen but since they are paid by the hour the result is not so satisfactory A large number ot men are affected by this change On the Utah division alone I in the mechanical department are employed 1250 men with a pay rolL of 13000 a month Reducing the week by five hours or twenty I hours a month takes from them over Sl000 per month on a small estimate This division is much the smallest of tho seven I mechanical divisions on tho entire system i Making an estimate according to these fig i ures a reduction of wages at the least calculations cal-culations of 125000 a year is obtained The larger share of the men in this department de-partment belong to the Knights of Labor Before this move could be made the company com-pany was obliged to consult this organization organiza-tion notifying it that a reduction of expenses ex-penses must bo made and asking for a recommendation I rec-ommendation of the manner of making it The Knights preferred to have the hours I of labor rather than the number of employees i em-ployees reduced I Railroad Personals I J H McConnell of Denver superinten dent of motive power and machinery of the i Union Pacific system Is in the city looking after the interests of his department He I finds the department under the charge of A O Hinckley in a most excellent condi tionDr Dr Galbrith of Omaha chief surgeon of the Union Pacific railroad is in the city |
