Show JUSTICE BLATOHFORI DEAD He Passed Quietly and Peacefully from Earth Last Evening NEWPORT R I July Associated Justice Samuel Blatchford passed quietly and peacefully from earth at 720 this evening He retained consciousness unti an hour or two before death There was no sudden change in his condition sim nly a gradual slipping away which has been taking place for the past week Arrangements for the funeral are not yet completed but the body will probably betaken be-taken to Washington for interment For many seasons he has been a quiet visitor to this city during the summer season and while not greatly given to society following he was frequently entertained in the first families Samuel Blatchford associate justice of the United States Supreme court was born in New York city March 91820 He graduated from Columbia college in 1837 received from u that college in 1867 the decree of LLD He was private secretary I sec-retary to Governor William H Seward for three years was 1 admitted to the bart bar-t S in 18 and en i 1 gaged in the practice gf prac-tice of law in New 6 York city removed 2 to Auburn N Yin I Y-in 1845 and became 1 1 the law partner of I A 7 Governor Seward o C MBLATCHFORO in 1852 commenced LTCI the publication of the decisions of the United States Circuit court relocated in New York city in 185 was appointed by President Johnson John-son judge 01 the district court for the Southern district of New York in May 1867 was appointed circuit judge of the Second judicial district by President Hayes March 4 1870 was appointed associate justice of the Supreme court of the United States March 22 1882 by President Arthur Death of George AV Rose EUREKA Utah July 7Special George W Rose a wellknown Californian Califor-nian and 49er died here at 6 p m today to-day of Brights desease |
