Show GARFIELD DREW A CROWD A Balloon Ascension Boat Races Bathing Bath-ing and Dancing From 5000 to 7000 people saw the sights and enjoyed the fun at Garfield Beach Each succeeding train brought in large crowds which almost unanimously made for the lake enjoying a plunge in the brine There were fully 1200 bathers scattered around the great piles of the pavilion and farther out in the greater depths at one time There was just enough swell to make bathing thorough pleasure and the hot sun tempered the water to a warmth which was delightful A throne of merrymakers crowded the dancing pavilion all day and until the last train came in the orchestra drew hundreds of the devotees of Terpsichore Several events were scheduled for the afternoons exercises and the revelers were surfeited with enjoyment Aside from dancing and bathing the balloon ascension by Professor Leonard was the principal attraction The immense balloon arose to a height of 2500 feet before be-fore the drop was made the daring acrobat starting for earth head first hanging from the ropes by his feet After a drop of about 100 feet the parachute para-chute opened easily to the light wind allowing Leonard to come down alowing Lonard gracefully grace-fully and easily upon the point of land onehalf mile to the southeast of the bathhouses Leonard has been in the business for eight years and has made 191 jumps all of which were successful but one I oneThe boat race although well rowed with strong arms and graceful shells attracted at-tracted comparatively little notice because the watchers were uncertain whether the race was on or the members only warming warm-ing up until it was all over with Toe crews were composed of Peabody Pembroke Pem-broke Sherman A H Peabody stroke A H Coffin McGill Brown Kelly stroke All are members of the Salt Lake Rowing association The former crew won both heats the latter by about three lengths I In the evening dancing was suspended for a time to allow everyone an opportunity opportu-nity to see the fireworks which were of handsome design and manipulated by competent hands After the display was over dancing was resumed and continued until 1 oclock The day was a pleasant one in every way The fun shown brightly the atmosphere at-mosphere was clear there were no brawls no quarrels and no drunks Messri Burley Spencer Washburn and Locke were on hand and always accessible making mak-ing every possible suggestion and or rangementlor the comfort of those partaking par-taking of their hospitality The Fourth at Garfield was just what It should have been a day of quietude and yet one of much pleasure |
