Show FOUR PISTOL SHOTS P H Donnelly Was In the Nine Hole and Suicided DRINK GOT THE BEST OF HIM Four Ghastly Bullet Holes Tell the Story of a Tragic Death in the Railroad Exchange Hotel Two suicides in a single week Drink and despondenoy drove both men to take their own lives At 5 oclock yesterday afternoon the porter opened the door of a room occupied by P H Donnelly and the stench was so strong that it made him sick The body was lying on the bed the legs crossed and a pistol at the hips four bullet bul-let holes in the center of the breast a pool of blood told the story of a suicide The body wan taken to the undertaking rooms of S D Evans and Coroner Harris hold an inquest last evening Several witnesses wit-nesses were called and the evidence revealed that the deceased had been in this city since February He had held good positions in Stockton Gal and workod for the Studebaicers at Aspen Col where Willa his wife and the baby were left to the care of a brother Since coming to this city he had been stopping stop-ping at the Railroad Exchange hotel kept by B F Whittemore He was out of work drinking hard and bard up for cash The last seen of him was Friday at between 3 and 4 oclock in the morning when W H White II plasterer met him in front of the Exchange hotel Mr White testified I am boarding at the hotel I have met the man and had a passing acquaintance The last time I saw him was between 3 and oclock Friday morning Wo had quite a talk Vo got Talking about lushing He said if a man once got down it was hard for him to get up Ho said he was once employed em-ployed by the Studebakers but drink got the best of him I am now in the nine hole was the way he expressed ex-pressed it He said he had been in Stockton Stock-ton Cal I told him he had better go back He replied ho had two good jobs there but threw them up After we parted there I did not see him any more He told me he had been drinking for a long timo He was terribly nervous his hands trembling tremb-ling A Todd foreman at the Whittomoro hotel tcstilied His hat was laying on his pistol near his hip his legs cross eo The moment I opened the door 1 smelled the stench and it made me sick The door was open this yesterday morning and I think it was yesterday morning I heard tonight to-night of a pistol shot having been heard Thursday evenincr after supper A man waiting on a sick lady opened several doors to rind the cause of some unusual noise but found nothing If be had sense he would have reported to me B F Whittemore The body had on a nice gold watch a gold ring worth s1O and a charm He always paid as he went along continued Mr Wmttemoro No evidence of liearine the pistol shots except this was produced The following letter from a brother in Aspen Colo was found on the body of the deceased P H Donnelly DEAn BROTHER Thought I would drop you a note Willa and baby are real well and you must not worry for them as I am only too pleased to have them with us Baby Donnelly is lovely ana often talks of papa I am real sorry Peto to hear of your ill luck But dont get discouraged and hope all will bo O K in the near future Dont cry over the past You know we all have to have experience which generally costs dearly But you are young and can easily start anew As you told me last summer Give mo an apron and a hammer and I can easily make a living I liv-ing We are sorry and only wish we were fixed financially that we could lend you a helping hand Villa and baby are welcome and 1 hope you will not worry for them But write otten to Willa as she looks for a letter from you in every mail I hope you settle in Colorado and hope to hear of your being contented and happy soon With love and best wishes from JOB and I Lovingly NEAL A party stated that Donnelly showed him a check for over 100 Wednesday As 521 was found in his pockets it is believed that ho had it cashed on Thursday and that he spent the difference in paying bills and spreeing The coroners jury rendered the usual verdict of death by a pistol shot |
