Show GUITEATPS REVOLVER Washington Police Department Trying to Get It for Their Museum WASHINGTON July 2SThe police department de-partment people are trying to get the pistol with which Guiteau shot Garfield to add it to the museum of such articles already collected and on exhibition Mr Donovan Don-ovan who was property clerk of the police department at the time of the tragedy says tho district attorney carried it away from the static house after Guiteaus arrest and the clerk could never get him to crive it up He called on Colonel Corkhill the following follow-ing day and several times afterward but the colonel said would remain in his safe until after the trial and then itwould be returned to the police but after the trial Colonel Corkhill stated that for the present it would remain in his office Donovan then reported the matter to Commissioner Thomas E Morgan then in charge of the police department and he understood his report was referred to 1 court the chief justice of the district supreme ourtAbout a week afterwards continued Donovan I received an order of the court to turn over the revolver to Col I orkhill and on the back of the order was Col l Corkhills receiptfor the same I respectfully returned the order to the court with the indorsement Not corn pled with for the reason I was unable to do sOs the property mentioned men-tioned was not then nor ever has been in my possession I also notified Col Cork hi I returned his receipt to tb Court as I would not accept a receipt for prop arty never in my custody That closed my efforts to get charge of the revolver |
