Show At the Tabernacle There was the usual large congregation congre-gation at the tabernacle yesterday afternoon af-ternoon many strangers being in the congregation After singing by the choir Elder Hamilton G Park offered prayer Elder Brigham Young was the first speaker and he gave his experiences while on a mission to New Mexico recently re-cently He had visited many settlements settle-ments and isolated places not reached by the railroad by traveling with a team thereby gaining a good idea of the primitive way in < which the Saints journeyed to this land I was to him almost inconceivable that the good seed planted by the Saints in 1847 could so flourish and increase scattering scatter-ing its life throughout the nations of the earth The people of southern Utah Arizona New Mexico and Colorado Colo-rado are suffering to a great extent at this time owing to the drouth prevalent pre-valent in those lands Many of the people of New Mexicd said they had determined to aband6n that country and settle in another where their substance sub-stance can more readily be had but the speaker said he did not believe they would leave their land Those who depended upon their own exertions exer-tions were truly having a severe time but they who put their trust in God were being cared for I is a hard time with all in consequence of the depression in the mining industry and the condition of the country at large but while he looked fOr better times there would come a time when the people of the world would suffer far more and the faith of the righteous would be tested to the utmost extent There is a great work to be done in New Mexico said he and those who sfid are laboring there are being blessed by the all powerful providence He then spoke of the advantages and resources of New Mexico and concluded conclu-ded his remarks by telling how necessary neces-sary it was that they should live their religion and not seek after worldly world-ly things that pleased the fancy and satisfied the appetite of the unrighteous unright-eous Elder George H Smith was then reQuested re-Quested to speak of the condition of the people in the Southern states from where he had lately returned from a mission He said that the prejudices of the people of the south against the Mormons Mor-mons were no lese than the prejudices of this people against them And the reason why our people had received so much persecution in bygone days was through the misrepresentation of their mission Nowadays the elders go in a systematic manner throughout that land l and they succeed in enlisting enlist-ing the sympathy of many who were at first set directly against their principles prin-ciples After speaking of the experiences experi-ences which the elders receive in that country lie concluded by expressing his thanks to God for allowing him the privilege of once more hearing the choir second to none in its heavenly singing and once more dwelling among his friends and brethren The congregation was then requested to join with the choir in singing hymn No 182 after which Elder George Q Cannon pronounced the benediction I |
